About Kyle
Over twenty years of playing all my taught instruments has shown me there is not one specific way to teach music to every person, so I change my curriculum for every student and completely customize what you learn to how you learn, and what you're interested in!
I started teaching music lessons in after school programs when I was eleven and fell totally in love. I continued to do this for many years driving to neighboring towns, volunteering at church youth groups and local Boys and Girls Club all around my hometown.
In Portland I've been gigging, playing on records, recording music for films, and volunteering every week at Nonprofit Music Schools around town to help underprivileged kids, and expose them to the joy of music. Give me a call and we can talk about what you're interested in, and get lessons started.
I'm fairly laid back, and teach from a number of different texts depending on the interests of the student. Each student is different, and I vary instruction accordingly. I have a lot of experience songwriting, composing, and playing as a sideman in groups on different instruments. I've been part of bands led by myself and been hired by other people, as well as composing for different groups of instruments from trios to full orchestras.
If there is interest, I can also provide worksheets based on the curriculum and standards held by the University of Oregon, and Portland State University.
I got started at thirteen when I made an afterschool rockband program at my rural middle school, and then I started directing the middle school choir when I was in high school. This transferred directly into my going to music school, and getting a scholarship for Vocal Performance and Music Education and Choral Direction, which then led me to all my other loves of composition, and performing!
I've been teaching for almost fifteen years, I've studied Music Education, Composition, and Jazz Performance Oregon State University, the University of Oregon, and Portland State University, and have lived as a professional musician for ten years, supporting myself entirely through music.

Firstly we talk about experience, intrests and aspirations - following that we'll create a set of short term and long term goals and adjust the curriculum based upon those - sometimes we're able to have lessons based on one specific goal: a wedding song, nailing a band audition, getting your sight-reading up to speed before a music school audition - and then we put everything together and start chipping away.
I believe that the first thing to think about with a teacher is the actual experience of the teacher, their flexibility, and their background. Any teacher worth their salt should be able to teach more than one instrument because of the fluidity of the language of music - the rules that apply to a bass also apply to a ukulele, and a good teacher should be able to demonstrate that fact, and remove the fogginess surrounding what certain musicians do. A teacher able to do this, will then be able to teach music that they don't personally know, increasing their ability to be flexibile.
My girlfriend and housemate recently took me to see one of my absolute favorite comedians, and I couldn't have been more excited or fulfilled.

My daughters have been taking lessons (Guitar & Piano) from Kyle for almost 2 years. We have been nothing but pleased. He is academically and professionally accomplished which we appreciate. One of my kids is painfully shy and he has handled her shyness very well. She's out of her shell now and doing well. He tailors the lessons to meet each child's needs and is flexible to include their personal interests in music within lessons. I also appreciate that he is teaching my guitar student how to actually read music and not just chords so that later down the road, she can pick up any instrument and learn to play it with ease. Kyle is a good fit for our family and will be a good fit for yours!
I want to share our experience with my Son's piano teacher.
Kyle Shipp has been my 15 year old Son's piano teacher for 5 plus years.
Kyle has truly been amazing. My Son looks forward to his piano lessons and I believe a huge part of this is Kyle and his teaching style,
The connection he has with his students i feel is amazing. Kyle may roll his eyes however, he has not only been a piano teacher to Ethan...I feel he has been a mentor and a person Ethan truly connects with and I see this as a huge benefit.
He has done a stellar job with teaching Ethan and bringing my Son along further than I ever anticipated.
I know Ethan would agree when I say we are the lucky ones in finding an amazing musician, teacher and mentor in Kyle
His communication with myself and Ethan is an A+....
If you are looking for a qualified teacher, look no further. Kyle truly is a talented teacher and his passion and compassion shine.
Thanks Kyle for sticking with Ethan and allowing him to grow into a young adult and teaching him not only piano but about life.
TrinaKyle has a thorough knowledge of how music works. He's patient and fun and is teaching me a lot about how to improvise on the piano, helping me to see the meaning behind all the rote learning I did when I took classical lessons as a child. He understands how to communicate concepts so that I can immediately apply them to create new sounds and enjoy myself. I definitely recommend him as a teacher, whatever your instrument!
Kyle is a talented musician with years of experience teaching students of all levels. He not only has technical versatility across multiple instruments and voice, but a depth of knowledge regarding musical theory, composition and the common threads that reach across genres. With a growing studio, he's also incorporating the craft of production to his repertoire.
Rather than sticking to a set curriculum, Kyle applies a keen ear to elicit students’ interests and needs, and responds by crafting appropriate lessons. I’ve received the right amount of challenge coupled with flexibility - and am overall very pleased with my development.View more recommendations
