About Olivia

Aspiring middle and high school grade teacher and museum educator with practical experience in teaching, facilitation, archival research, and curriculum and program building. An active member in the sorority community through the position as the President of the College Panhellenic Council, and an active member of the academic community through induction to Phi Alpha Theta, Sigma Iota Rho, Order of Omega and Kappa Delta Pi honor societies.
Ever since I was a little kid I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I have always loved working with people and talking about the things I am passionate about and would get so excited when someone said "tell me more". As I got older, I would always want to help up my teachers and would advocate for projects that included having to teach the class - that was when I knew I wanted to be a teacher.
As a recent graduate of Baldwin Wallace Univerity with a Bachelor of Arts in History and AYA Social Studies Licensures, I have spent the past four years preparing to be an effective educator. I have spent over a hundred hours in various classrooms ranging in ages, subjects, and development. I completed both an internship and clinical practice in a high school, but have also spent countless hours in both elementary schools and middle schools.
Additionally, I have interned at multiple education institutions including, The Franklin Institute, Museum of Contemporary Art, The Cleveland History Center, and The Greater Cleveland Aquarium. These internships provided me a further opportunity to develop as an educator and work with diverse groups of learners.

The most important thing to do when you are starting to work with new students is to get to know them. Finding out their areas of academic strength and areas of improvement are is vital to understanding the student, but it is also extremely important to get to know the students as people. Finding out what their interests are is just as important as knowing what their academic focuses are. This step also includes learning about any previous accommodations that the students have had in the past to adapt that to tutoring.
After that, developing a groundwork for where the students are. What were their recent classes like? What information are they solid on or where are they struggling. Are there parts of history and social studies that they are particularly interested in. This is based on the ideas of Constructivist Theory, where teachers create lessons that build on each other and develop connections between the student's lives and the information you are teaching.
As teachers, we are taught that developing a rapport with students is paramount, and that is something that I firmly believe in as well.
In schools I have dominantly worked with high school students, however, through internships I have worked with students ranging from eight to eighteen. Additionally, I have worked with students that have IEPs and 504s, students with physical or developmental disabilities, and students that are coming from both private and public schools.
There are two things to look for - content and personality. The teacher could know everything about a subject, but also might not be a good match for you. You have a choice of who you hire, so make sure it is someone that is going to work for you.
In February, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Cleveland History Center for their National History Day competition. I was able to truly watch history come alive, while also volunteering at my favorite museum. It was a competition where I was able to learn so much about a variety of historical topics and really watch students come alive with their passion for history.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. Does this person have the time to tutor me (this is actually huge!)
2. Is this person excited about social studies?
3. Is this person willing to make adjustments when they are necessary
I would say these are the three biggest questions to ask - you want to find a tutor that is going to help you so making sure you really think about your tutor is very important.
