About Zachary
I've been working with students to achieve academic success over the past 4 years. Personally, I love teaching social studies! I think everybody can relate to it in someway shape or form. Your civic education and engagement is only just beginning and is going to be extremely important to you and everybody around you wherever you go in life. However, I might be biased because I've been working as a US history, AP government and Economics teacher at Bronx Latin. Everyday I am making that same argument in an effort to get more future leaders and young peoples inspired and involved in their respective communities.
Making powerful arguments, understanding historical context, biases and perspectives and is part of why I love teaching this subject as well. Moreover, these are the pillars of social studies education and curriculum. My students are required to pass the New York State regents and AP exams for US history and AP government. I have implemented hundreds of strategies to help studies grasp these challenging concepts and recall complex topics. If you are somebody who struggles with these tests, I'm sure I can help design a targeted educational strategy to increase your chances of passing and excelIing on these standardized exams.
As for my credentials, I started teaching by joining the 2018 cohort for Teach for America after I completed my undergradute degree in Psychology and Asian American Studies at Binghamton University. I am a fully certified grades 7-12 educator for the NYC Deptment of Education. I received my Masters of Arts in teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education with a focus in secondary social studies education. If you have any more questions about me or my qualifications please do not hesitate to ask!
I've always loved history and I have lots of experience working with young people so, I applied to teach for America my first year out of college! I was looking for something meangingful that could give me a greater sense of purpose in my career. It was a difficult transition especially since in teach for America you are a full time teacher while getting your masters degree and fulfilling your certification requirements, but it is been the most exciting and enriching experience of my life. I do love teaching the subject matter, but the enjoyment I get out of making students love history or pass their exams is what makes it genuinely worth it.
I have a Masters in Teaching from Relay Graduate School for Education. I've received extensive training from the school that I've worked at for the last 4 years (Bronx Latin). I am an alumni of the Teach for America Corps of 2018 In which, we learned extensively about culturally relevant practicies and basic educational strategies. Prior to that, I received an Bachelors degree in Arts and Sciences from Binghamton University with a focus on Psychology and Asian American studies. I worked as a camp counselor at the YMCA from the age of 15-20 as well.

I start with a baseline assessment of the subject that they are struggling in and then, give them a questionaire to understand the students own assessment of their abilities and themselves personally.
After, we analyze the results of the baseline and questionaire together we can then target the areas that they need to work on in order to improve their skills and/ or knoweledge of the subject.
I primarily work with students in grades 10th through 12th but, my certification is in 7-12th grade. I feel more than comfortable working with students who are at a middle school level as well.
You definitely want to find a teacher that you feel comfortable working with and that is experienced in your testing or subject field. I believe it is important to ask questions when working with a tutor so, make sure to find somebody you think you could have a strong working relationship with. Ask yourself "Do I think this teacher is going to provide me with the best teaching strategy for my learning needs?" If not, then find somebody who does. Education is not a one size fits all practice. Everybody is different and sometimes it takes the right teacher or tutor to help you realize that.
It was a very difficult year for my students, especially my graduating senior class. They were all a very hardworking, brilliant, and compassionate cohort and the COVID-19 pandemic really crushed their chances of having a rewarding senior year. So, at the very end, the senior grade team teachers, including myself, threw them a socially distant and safe impromptu graduation ceremony with just the students. It was the first time I had seen some of these students in person all year since we have been teaching remotely. Many students struggled with online learning since, they were getting the direct support they needed. Some students almost didn't pass my classes which they needed to graduate. However, every single student was able to pass and walk on stage to recieve their diploma. I will miss them all very much and will remember that day for a long time.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
"What do I need from a tutor that I cannot accomplish on my own?"
"What are the areas that I am struggling with most?"
"What are my goals? How can hiring a tutor help me accomplish my goals?"
"Am I looking for somebody to tell me answers or guide me towards the best answers?"

He helped me through a lot of hard assignments and was always ready to help. And I really enjoyed his teaching. He’s an amazing teacher and fun to work with.
Working with Mr.Silverman was inspiring and one of the best experiences. It takes me quite some time to learn new material but Silverman makes learning enjoyable and fun by using real life examples that we can relate to. Also, he is very understanding and always available to help his students outside of class.
