About Brian
ABOUT BRIAN, YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Brian Critchley has been practicing yoga since 1998 and has studied with teachers in the Iyengar, Anusara, and Kundalini traditions. He began practicing yoga while getting his undergraduate degree at Princeton University and quickly became hooked by the peace of mind, physical flexibility and balance, and new spiritual outlook that yoga provided. After working for a decade in the non-profit world as a marketing, advertising, and online media specialist he decided to make his passion for yoga a career. Brian received his initial training at Inner Light Yoga Center, a studio with a strong attention to alignment principles and anatomical learning. This along with his training as a Licensed NJ Massage Therapist helps him understand more clearly what is going on "under the skin" in his students' bodies while they practice. In the years that have followed he has continued his yoga study with his mentor and teacher, Donna Amrita Davidge of NYC and Island Falls, Maine. During his time with Donna he has developed a deeper understanding for the more subtle, energetic components of yoga through study of Kundalini Yoga, Yoga Nidra, and Restorative Yoga. As a professional yoga teacher he has taught thousands of hours of both private and group classes as a faculty member at countless NJ studios and wellness centers. In addition, he has an ongoing relationship with several residential 55+ communities to offer Yoga for Seniors as part of their wellness program. Since becoming an ERYT (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher) in 2012 he has partnered with several NJ studios including Shore Point Yoga (Point Pleasant), YogaSoul (Princeton Junction), and Onsen for All (Kingston) to create and instruct teacher training material for their yoga programs. In 2015 he completed a certificate in Holistic Life Coaching to add more skills to his tool kit and enhance his offerings to include Mentoring & Coaching for yoga teachers. His practice is a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School offering private teacher training and advanced continuing education for teachers. His favorite things about his job are teaching newcomers and seeing their smiles after their first class; holding space for new teachers as they find their voice; sharing anatomical principles with students to help demystify challenging poses; and the deep connections forged with ongoing private students. He can't imagine he'd ever want to retire from a career this rewarding so you'll likely find him in 70 years teaching on a beach in Key West. Brian resides in Monmouth County and understands that sometimes wet sand makes the best yoga mat.
