About Elena

I have 5 years of teaching experience in a rigorous Brooklyn charter school with experience teaching Kindergarten, 2nd & 4th Grades. I have experience tutoring 3rd-5th grade students for the NYS ELA & Math state tests. 100% and 98% of my students have passed the Math & ELA state test respectively. My areas of expertise include: phonics, reading, numeracy/operations/problem solving/prealgebra skills, and test preparation. I am trained in the Foutnas & Pinnell, Leveled Literacy Intervention, Context for Learning (Math), and TERC (STEM) curriculums.

My goal is to meet students where they are and help them identify and utilize the learning styles that best work for them.

Currently I am completing a Master of Social Work at Columbia University and am looking to serve the whole child in the tutoring experience. This includes not just building academic skills but also self-esteem, self-awareness, reflective, and a self-advocacy skill set.

I love seeing the personal growth that happens in individual tutoring sessions. Good tutors teach academic skills. Great tutors teach students how to recognize their own learning style and advocate for themselves in academic settings. This creates self-driven learners which transfers outside of the classroom setting.

I tutored and mentored students throughout high school and college. My formal teaching experience began directly out of undergrad as an Associate Teacher at a Brooklyn Charter School. Within three months I was promoted to a Lead Teacher position which I held for the following five years before transitioning to graduate school this year. Currently, I am completing a Master of Social Work at Columbia University.

I have five years of lead teaching experience and curriculum development at a rigorous Brooklyn charter school. I was trained in multiple literacy and math curriculums for grades Kindergarten through 5th and have access to external resources as well.

For short term students: The first session is spent assessing their areas of growth and developing a plan with the student and parent with clear goals and timelines. The following sessions are spent working towards the goal and at an agreed upon time, a re-assessment is given to determine growth and next steps.

For long term students: The first two sessions are spent assessing the student's strength and growth points in the academic areas that they want support with. The third session is spent reviewing those areas with a parent/guardian and developing a detailed timeline and plan for how to best support the student. Depending on the frequency of sessions, we would do formal re-assessments every 1-2 months and adapt the goals accordingly.

I have worked with students ages 4-13 from a diverse set of backgrounds. I have had the honor to work with kindergarteners who did not know their alphabet on the first day of school and followed them through their elementary educational journey to fourth grade where we worked on constructing essays and pre-algebra skills. I deeply understand the learning and developmental trajectory of elementary and middle school students as I've had the opportunity to teach and build curriculum through all the learning stages.

I successfully have worked with students who utilize an IEP, 504 plan, and other supplemental behavioral plans. Additionally, I have experience working with English Language Learners.

Ask the teacher about how they assess and cater to your learning style. What are their specific strategies and resources for supporting how you learn best?

I got a call from a former middle school student out of the blue telling me that she had started tutoring a peer in math and was using teaching and learning strategies that we had worked on together in the past. This was a very full circle moment for me!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What has helped you be successful or challenged you in academic settings in the past?

What areas are you looking for support in? What are your academic and personal strengths?

What goals do you have for yourself? How would you like support in identifying or reaching those goals?

When you're feeling frustrated or challenged, what is a go-to coping or focusing strategy that works for you? Is this an area you want support in?
