About Oliver

Hi! My name is Oliver and I'm a 22-year-old recent college grad with the following academic achievements:

-HS Weighted GPA: 4.3 - Class Rank: 19th out of 666

-SAT Score: 2090 (2400 scale) - 96th percentile

-B.A. Economics - UCSD (top 50 global): 3.5 GPA

-Completed college-level calculus series with a 3.3

-Completed college-level economics statistics series with a 3.8

-Completed college-level writing courses with a 3.5

As a recent grad and a millennial, one of my major strengths is being able to relate to my students and make them feel more comfortable during my tutoring sessions. Whether it's Math or English, I excel at breaking down difficult concepts into easier, more tangible ideas to help my students better internalize their coursework.

My favorite part about being a tutor is being able to see my students' "light-bulb" reaction when they finally understand the concept they were struggling with for so long. Helping people is super rewarding to me, so tutoring is the perfect way for me to earn some money while doing something that I also enjoy.

Especially since I work full time as a marketing analyst, I really like the change of pace that tutoring offers me after work hours. I remember how terrible school feels when you're just not getting it, and I'm glad that I have this opportunity to relieve some of that stress for the students that I work with.

I got started tutoring as an upperclassmen in college, looking for an extra source of income that could fit around my class schedule. Since I always exceled at academics in grade school, I felt confident I could convey these ideas/concepts to others in a clear, easy-to-understand language. I ended up really enjoying my time tutoring in college as a result and decided to continue this part-time job after I graduated (this time in Los Angeles instead of San Diego).

Graduated high school with a 4.3 GPA, and the University of California, San Diego with a B.A. in Economics and a 3.5 GPA. Completed college-level calculus series with a 3.3, and college-level economics statistics with a 3.8

I don't have a one-size-fits-all approach, but I like to start out by getting a feel for what they're having trouble with. From there, I try to figure what they already understand and build on that knowledge until they get to understand what they're struggling with. If a student doesn't fully remember relevant concepts from previous courses (which is often the case in math especially), I make sure to take the time out to help them re-learn that as well. That often can be the underlying problem of many student's struggles.

One of my strengths is being able to explain a concept concisely in a number of different ways, so I'm confident I have the ability and the patience to teach difficult concepts to kids and teenagers, alike!

I can work with students of all ages!

I'd say patience and communication skills are just as important as their mastery of the subject

I went on a trip to Spain with my best friend for a week!
