About Mattison
I firmly believe that math is a discovery science that can be fun to explore! I strive to help students not only gain procedural knowledge but also conceptual knowledge of why mathematical "rules" work. I've been helping fellow classmates understand mathematical principles since I was in kindergarten, and I've worked as a tutor since high school. Since then, I've earned a bachelor's degree in Secondary Math Education (5-Adult) and managed my own classes of Algebra I, Algebra Support, Geometry, and Math 3.
I've been privileged to help students reach their academic goals, whether the goals are passing a class, earning higher grades, or qualifying for their dream career programs with higher standardized test scores. In the meantime, I love seeing students grasp mathematical concepts and realize that they can be good at math!
I've loved sharing my love for learning since I was in kindergarten. I can remember teaching other students how to add on the bus rides to and from school. Then at the end of 10th grade, I realized that I had a passion for teaching, and I've striven to strengthen my skill in this area ever since.
I have earned a bachelor's degree in Secondary Math Eduation (Grade 5 - Adult Education). Hence, I have both a degree in Education and Mathematics, and I earned both with high honors. I've been enrolled in education classes since 11th grade and have attended several seminars related to education.

As I work with a student on the skills they are learning in class, I can often identify prerequisite skills that may need strengthened. Hence, I'd recommend that we practice such skills at the beginning of each lesson before we move on to homework, studying for an upcoming assessment, etc.
For instance, if I notice that an Algebra I student who is solving equations is struggling with integer operations, I would review this topic, perhaps by even providing a visual explanation for the "rules," and recommend that we begin each class with such practice until the student masters the concept.
In 11th grade, I was a student tutor in a 3rd grade classroom, and in 12th grade, I helped in a 7th grade math class. I've also been a private tutor for middle school and high school students. In 2019, I worked as a full-time teacher-in-residence teaching Algebra 1, Algebra Support, Geometry, and Math 3. My students that year included mostly freshman but also sophomores and seniors. I was also the Math Field Day coach for a group of juniors and seniors after school.
A good math teacher cannot only tell a student a "rule" but also soundly explain the reasoning behind the rule.
One of my geometry lessons last year involved discovering the formula for the circumference of a circle using the formula of a parallelogram. The students cut a parallelogram into sectors and then rearranged the figure into a circle. We discovered that the length of the parallelogram was equal to half the circumference of the circle or pi(radius). Also, the width of the parallelogram was equal to the radius of the circle. Since we knew the areas of the two figures were equal, we could conclude that the area of a circle is pi*radius*radius or pi*radius^2. This exploration helped the students remember the formula!

What were the main mathematical concepts or ideas that I learned today or that we discussed in class today?
What questions do I still have about ____ ?
At what point during my solution am I unsure of what to do?

MJ has a very accommodating, patient, easy-to-follow, approach to tutoring. Enjoyed every session.
Mattie started working with my 11 year old daughter a few months ago. She made a connection with my daughter, Miranda, who happens to have anxiety, ADHD and high functioning autism. While Miranda's school was in the online schedule phase, due to Covid, I asked Mattie to come in four hour increments. I was worried that Miranda would grow bored and recommended frequent breaks, but she and Mattie worked well together. Mattie has been accommodating with our schedule and is very dependable. She works with Miranda on organizational skills as well as Math. Miranda was behind in her assignments, but is now caught up. She is also showing progress with her test scores. I highly recommend Mattie!
She’s super patient and knows her stuff. Always takes her time and makes sure the student understands before moving on. I am very pleased and will use her services again for my younger child.
