About Melissa
Over ten years experience tutoring students in mathematics ranging from elementary to graduate level math courses.
Specialties in Algebra (I, II, College, and Linear), Geometry, Calculus Series, and Differential Equations, as well as applied mathematics in the sciences.
Calm, friendly instruction geared toward the individual needs of each student.
A professor of mine asked me to take a position tutoring at OCC, and later classmates whom I would help after lectures with the material began offering to pay me for more extensive lessons.
I have completed mathematics coursework at Oakland Community College, the University of Michigan, and Wayne State University. I was trained and worked as a tutor at Oakland Community College, before branching out on my own at the request of classmates. Over the past ten years of teaching, I have continued to learn and improve my education skills and techniques so that I can better serve my students.

I like to meet a new student, go over any quizzes or tests they've taken for a particular course or give them a quick quiz of my own design to assess their academic need, review the curriculum and determine the student's own academic goals, then create a system and teaching style that caters to their specific needs, class, and goals.
I have worked with students of all ages - from the ages of 4 to 74 - in virtually all types of math classes.
This includes students with learning differences, including ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, hearing and visual impairments, anxiety, and other rare disorders. I work with each and every student to meet them where they are, utilize their skills, and help them find ways to work around and cope with their challenges. I have truly never met two students whose situations are alike.
Be prepared to dedicate a good amount of time and energy to your education. A good teacher can be an invaluable resource, but math is a language that requires regular practice to master. The same way you cannot learn Spanish by simply watching a movie in another language once a week, you will not learn math simply by meeting with a tutor once a week. It is this, in conjunction with 3-4 hours a week of well-spent individual study, that will lead to success.
This past year I tutored myself out of a job with a young lady who came in with severe test/math anxiety. We worked together to formulate a curriculum and study plan to help her, and by the end of the year, she was self-managing her own course of study so efficiently that she really didn't need my help anymore. I feel confident that in future math courses, she will go in with the study skills to do well on her own (although I am always here if she needs extra help).
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do my current study habits look like?
Where do I struggle the most? (in class, while doing homework, quizzes & exams, etc)
What do I hope to gain from tutoring? (A certain grade in a class/Studying for a certain exam/Proficiency in a certain subject)
