About Carina

As a university student studying Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science, I've had a few mentors throughout my academic career who have changed my perspective on learning and teaching. I realize, especially as a female engineer, how important it is to have strong role models in the field. These experiences prompted me to take up tutoring in high school. Through helping peers and tutoring classmates, I have been exposed to a variety of perspectives and learning styles. With this, I am able to better form relationships with my tutees and adapt to each individual's learning style.

Whether it was through helping a student with special needs pass the Algebra Regents exam, teaching a Chinese-speaking classmate Earth Science, or studying Chemistry with a peer, I have learned how meaningful of an experience it is to teach and help others. Having such diverse tutoring experience has allowed me to broaden my familiarity with different ways of teaching and learning. This in turn, has promoted my personal growth, as each tutoring session allows me to share my passion for the subjects I love, as well as expand my own knowledge.

When my high school guidance counceslor first asked me if I'd be willing to tutor some struggling students, I welcomed the opportunity to earn gas and spending money, while sharing what I have learned.  But tutoring gave me more than a way of earning money.  It has broadened my professional and personal relationships, and expanded my ideas about studying and learning.  Having had so many positive experiences teaching, I developed a love for sharing my knowledge and decided to continue in its persuit.

In 2020, I graduated from Garden City High School with a 4.0 GPA.  Throughout high school, nearly all of the courses I took were honors-level, college-level, or AP.  Therefore, I have in depth knowledge of a wide range of subjects.  I scored a 1520 on my SAT and a 790 on the mathematics section.  I have also taken the Mathematics I, Mathematics II, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology SAT Subject Tests.  I am currently a rising sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania studying Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science with a GPA of 3.73.  Throughout my college and high school careers alike, I've developed a passion for STEM subjects and have continued to share this passion with others through tutoring.

Learning the strengths and weaknesses of each new student I have is the foundation for what makes me a great tutor.  In my first session with a new tutee I usually ask them to describe themselves as a student of the subject we are studying and list any struggles they may be having.  Then, I'll ask the student to complete a set of practice problems so that I can understand exactly where the problems are arising from.  From here, I'll typically know which material to focus on and explain in detail.

I have worked with middle school and high school students of many math and science levels including Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics.  The skill levels of my students have been extremely diverse, whether I was helping a student with special needs, a Chinese-speaking classmate, or one of my peers.
