I first get to know the student's interests and what he or she wishes to study or concentrate in. For example, a student may wish to learn how to play chords and/or playing fingerstyle technique or classical technique, but not necessarily learn music theory. However, to truly learn music performance, as well as composition, I try to encourage the student to learn music theory as well as performance. This ensures a well rounded exposure to the language of music.
