About Joseph
I have over 12 years of experience teaching students a variety of subjects in one-on-one situations. I started as a tutor as an undergraduate student myself, tutoring in psychology courses, biopsychology, psychological statistics, and public speaking. I then went on to serve as a Teaching Assistant and a Professor in my own right as a graduate student. I have spent the past few years as a Visiting Assistant Professor in psychology at a small liberal arts school. All in all, I've served as the instructor for 14 courses in the past few years. I am dedicated with extremely flexible hours and I have an unyielding desire to see people be successful.
The best part about teaching others is the sanctification of knowing that you are helping someone else. I have a feel-good drawer full of letters and cards and even a cross-stitched neuron that I have received from students thanking me for my help. Nothing feels better than that.
I always wanted to be a teacher from as young as I can remember. At 3-years-old, I used to cry when the bus did not stop at my house. My first job teaching was during college when I served as a tutor in the learning center and was the Teaching Assistant for Biopsychology and Psychological Statistics.
I have PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience from Kent State University.
I have over 12 years of tutor or teaching experience including working as a visiting assistant professor at a small liberal arts school for the past 3 years.

The best approach I find is to have the student self-reflect on what exactly they might be struggling with. Too often, students become overwhelmed and lose sight of what they know, thinking they know nothing or that everything is confusing. By working with them to pinpoint the specific areas of concern, we can then craft a specific gameplan to help them. Next, I put a strong emphasis on teaching certain skills, such as critical thinking, rather than having all focus being on memorizing materials for that particular class or that particular test. Too often, students learn only to shove as much information in as possible only to dump it once the assessment is complete. Instead, by focusing on critical thinking and on viable study strategies, I hope to help the student well beyond the bounds of that particular course.
I have worked with all sorts of students from all over the globe. I have worked with undergraduates and graduate students. I have worked with non-native english speakers.
Find a teacher that you are compatible with, but that is willing to challenge you. You know more than you think and you are capable of more than you think. The job of the teacher is to help you realize that potential.
