About Erica
I have a fine arts degree from Texas State University and I taught elementary art for 4.5 years in a public school. I am adept at working with special needs students as well as behaviorally challenging. I truly believe anyone can learn a creative art with hard work and a voice. Art isn’t about copying someone else’s work but expressing yourself. What makes you unique? Let’s explore together!
I absolutely love watching students grow and improve, but the best part about teaching is watching someone find their own style and voice.
I always wanted to teach, but most school districts were cutting their fine arts programs when I was graduating from college.
Fast forward to 2015 and I was offered the opportunity to teach part time in HISD. Within the first year that became a full time position.
Recently, I chose to remove myself from the classroom and offer private lessons in lieu of large group lessons.

The first step is assessing a new student's knowledge and ability in addition to understanding what it is they wish to learn or improve upon. This can be managed in an initial meeting with a quick quiz and simple timed sketch. It is important that a new student understands that this is only to assess the student's needs and allow me to offer the best individualized service possible.
I have worked with students ages 3-12 including students with special needs, ADHD, ED, and GT. One of my biggest strengths is finding ways to build relationships with students regardless of their situation. Art is something that connects us all.
Find a teacher that believes in YOU. Look for someone who will celebrate your successes and help you when you struggle. If you don't look forward to working with someone, then it is time to look elsewhere.

My daughter and I joined in on some random arts and crafts with Erica one afternoon. She showed us how to create our own magnificent crosses. Things I (nor my daughter) had never done before become very easy under the direction of Erica.
