About Michael
I am very patient with first time painting students. With over 17 years of oil painting experience, and 5 years of teaching experience, I bring decades of personal workshop attendance to your easel. Many of my past adult students have gone on to exhibit, won awards and successfully sold their paintings. They must have had a great instructor!!
I am available for private and group painting lessons in the SF Bay Area.
FYI, Oil painting is not a quick process you see on the older "Bob Ross" 30 minute videos. I recommend a minimum of 2 hours per session to get maximum value of your painting experience. Just like golf and playing the piano, it's all about practice, practice and more practice!
PS: Many recent requests have asked for "teaching of art to children". Teaching children requires special skills and training and there are lots of locations that specialize in that service. Oil painting requires the use of oil pigments and odorlss paint thinner, so these materials are not "kid friendly" and should be avoided. I only teach art to Adults, 18+ and older.
I enjoy teaching art almost as much as I do producing my oil paintings. My goal in High School was to be an Art Instructor and I first realized that goal 7 years ago.

I am a working oil painting artist since 2003. I specialize in plein air outdoor oil painting and San Francisco cityscapes using a palette knife.
I have an AA degree in Fine Art Oil Painting and have taken many painting classes at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. I host Open Studios at Hunters Point Navel Shipyard for the past 10 years.
I have taught oil/acrylic painting at Brisbane Mission Blue Center for the past 5 years. Additionally I have attended many oil painting workshops and paintouts nation wide in the past 15 years.
Additionally I have painted and sold over 350 original oil paintings. My paintings are collected nationally and internationally.

I work with lots of beginning painters and intermediate level painters looking to advance their painting skill level to the next step.
We start with the basics of composition, value studies, and simple color mixing using a limited palette of the primary colors plus white. We paint from still life compositions to practice color mixing and paint application. Advancing forward, students bring favorite photos for new paintings.
The photos are used for "reference only" and students are encouraged to us "artistic licence" to improve their paintings. The rest is all about, paint, paint, and more painting. Painting can be taught, but routine practice is required to move forward to becoming a better painter.
