About Denzil
I love helping new students begin and get their first feelings of joy at making music and feeling it in your body.
I've been playing latin and samba conga, surdo, and bells since the early 1990s. My favorite experience has been playing with a Brazillian samba dance class for a few years.
I like helping people. I offered casually while playing with a dance class, and picked up students along the way.
Been playing for 25 years, and have taught beginners along the way many times. I've also taught marketing, creative writing, and improvisation, and directed a few plays, so I am familiar with being the teacher and helping students feel comfortable learning something new.

We learn to sing or say the patterns before we play them, so students can practice anytime, anywhere. Even in the shower!
Then we start with the basics of how and where to hit the drum with the hand, and on the drum.
Beginning students will learn 5 patterns on drum or bell that are used in most latin or Brazillian rythyms. From there, they can grow and expand into anything.
Adults.
Teaching style is more important than technical mastery. So find someone you like, that feels supportive while you learn something new.
Of course, your teacher needs to know where the One is. And that should be of primary importance in your beginning lessons.
I've started recording some beats with a friend who is a pop music producer. I like how he takes my beats andn does stuff with them that I'd never imagine.
