About Nathan

Hi! I am Nathan Willems. I am a science teacher at Cedarville High School and live in the Springdale area. I am in my third year of teaching science and have worked in higher education for almost a decade before becoming a licensed teacher. I have worked in the University of Arkansas financial aid and scholarship offices and am quite familiar with the application process and how those applications are graded.

I am passionate about expanding our citizenry's knowledge of science to better prepare them for a future where more and more jobs and public policy will depend on science. Having the next generation effectively meet those challenges and rise above them into success requires them to attain a mastery over these subjects. I understand that not every student may see themselves as "good" at science but, in my experience, this is due to some rather old-fashioned thinking around educating youths in the field.

In my classroom I prioritize learning through inquiry, advanced problem solving for engineering questions, and fostering skills that reinforce student independence in academia.

I started teaching in the 2020-21 school year, right at the start of the pandemic. Probably the worst time to enter the professions but at least it can't get any worse from there.



I have a Bachelors of Science in physics from the university of Arkansas where I studied atomic force microscopy (fancy microscopes that can detect individual atoms). My minors were in math and Japanese. I am a licensed teacher in the state of Arkansas for the subjects of Chemistry, Physical Science, Anatomy & Physiology, and Environmental Science. Prior to getting my teaching license, I worked at the University of Arkansas for close to a decade in a variety of positions including their scholarships and financial aid offices.

First it is important to form a connection so that I can understand how the student best learns. I start each session with a short inquiry into the student's interests and goals.



My students are mostly from families below the poverty line in rural communities but I am hoping to teach students closer to my home in Springdale.



Make sure you give your teacher an idea of your life goals and don't be afraid to discuss possibilities if you haven't settled on anything yet. Don't be afraid to share information about yourself either. Being a better teacher for you requires that I have a better understanding of you.



Start of the school year is always a fun time for me. I get to  break the ice with a new batch of kids and show them some cool demonstrations in the first week of class. Sodium and luminol demonstrations always get the kiddos excited for the year.

Details

My sessions run at $15 an hour for a home visit and $10 an hour for online tutoring. I am willing to be flexible on the pricing for students from in-need families.
