About Eunice
I have taught countless piano students from ages 3–87 over the past 3-4 decades, in several states. My teaching career began as an independent piano instructor in Indianapolis, where I taught 30–45 private students for 13 years with high success and retention rates, maintaining a waiting list of up to 60.
Although I no longer use the Suzuki method per se, I had extensive Suzuki training after completion of my master’s degree, and used that method with most of my students in Indiana.
My current teaching method is primarily traditional and reading-based, but I still incorporate some of the best features of the Suzuki method with all of my students, including:
1) a relaxed hand technique to avoid tension
2) use of the ear as well as the eye to develop keyboard facility and to enhance sight-reading
3) the belief that a student at any level can learn to play his/her own pieces beautifully and up to tempo—and that the personal satisfaction from achieving this is the best motivator
4) a desire to ensure that playing the piano is only a positive experience for each student!
TEACHING EXPERIENCE:
~ 13 years of FT time private teaching, ages 3 - 65
~ 25 years of FT college teaching (Piano, Music Theory)
~ currently continue to teach part-time at Montreat College, while maintaining a private piano studio of children & adults
PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE:
~ Have performed extensively for several decades in various solo and chamber recital settings for colleges, churches, conference centers, and other organizations.
~ Solo recitals have been recorded and broadcast by Public Radio stations: WQED-Pittsburgh, and Radio Kansas
OTHER:
~ Have adjudicated countless Piano competitions in numerous states.
~ Have presented workshops and lecture recitals in several states.
~ Served for several years as a state Vice President for North Carolina Music Teachers Association.
~ Current member of the Asheville Area Piano Forum
There is absolutely nothing more rewarding to me than to teach a piano student to play a piece beautifully and expressively, to witness their own joy and satisfaction in doing so, and to realize how greatly their life will be enriched--musically and otherwise--because they have developed this skill.
Teaching so many very young children in my early years proved to be invaluable experience toward successfully teaching students of all ages since then.
My goal-oriented teaching style combines patience, praise, encouragement, and respect with the ability to quickly pinpoint gaps or misconceptions that are hindering progress. I enjoy finding creative ways to resolve these issues for each individual student-- breaking each concept down into smaller steps as needed. I often devise short, fun, preliminary exercises that greatly reduce the learning time of a particular piece; and it is extremely satisfying to frequently hear students say that they made much faster progress than they expected to, or successfully learned a piece that they thought would be too hard for them.
DEGREES:
~ B.M.E. -- Grace College, Winona Lake, IN
~ M.M. in Piano Performance--Indiana U. (Bloomington)
~ D.M.A. in Piano and Pedagogy--U. of Kansas
~ Official training in all levels of the Suzuki Piano Method (However, I do not currently teach the Suzuki Method, per se. See above.)

TRANSFER STUDENTS: If the student has studied piano in the past, then I try to build upon what they have already learned with as much continuity as possible--and with due respect for their former instructor.
I often find that transfer students have had good instruction in note-playing; have some understanding of 3 or 4 basic rhythmic note values; and may be observing some dynamic marks.
But many have not yet learned to incorporate logical and consistent fingering or articulation marks into the learning of a piece, or to count while playing to really feel the rhythm or to ensure that the more difficult rhythmic patterns are correct. These 3 issues are at least as important as playing correct notes, and the piece will not sound musically satisfying --either to the student or the listener--until these aspects are included.
So with transfer students who are deficient in these areas, I find a couple of pieces that they really like (letting them choose from several that I play for them). Then I gradually and patiently teach them to include these issues from the "get-go" as they learn a new piece.
I also teach students quite early to shape phrases expressively. Even a young child can be taught to do this, making even a very simple piece sound "professional."
BEGINNERS:
I begin teaching a new piano student to read music at the very first lesson, usually using an on-staff method even for young children. I ask them to buy one book-- which I recommend, depending on age, etc. But they also check out supplementary books on a weekly basis, for extra sight-reading practice.
I emphasize reading primarily by interval since that is the only way to learn to read music fluently. However, they also begin immediately to learn the names of the notes in each clef, through use of flashcards, etc.
After 2 or 3 months of study--in addition to their reading material, I also assign a couple of supplementary pieces which may be a little beyond their reading level but which they can learn partially by ear/rote/memory. I use pieces comprised mostly of repeated patterns or sequences, which utilize a wider range of the keyboard than their easy reading pieces do, and which may even use the pedal. This is extremely valuable for several reasons:
1) It develops the ear as well as the eye--which in turn actually enhances sight-reading ability.
2) It enables them to spend some time looking at the keyboard and their hands while they play, which is essential toward mastery of keyboard topography ("facility"), and toward developing a relaxed hand technique and ultimately speed.
3) It is incredibly motivating, since these pieces usually sound "harder" than their reading pieces. They are always anxious to start another one!

WEEKLY LESSON PLAN:
All children, and most adults who are at a beginning or elementary level will take a weekly 45-minute lesson at $28.50 (based on a reduced rate of $38 per hour). In order to secure their regular time-slot, these students are expected to take at least 12 lessons during each semester-- FALL: Aug. 15 – Dec. 31 / SPRING: Jan. 15 – May 31. These students may pay at the end of each month if they prefer.
NON-WEEKLY LESSON PLAN:
A few students (adults and some teens) may be accepted on a non-weekly lesson basis--due to a higher level of advancement, or excessive travel distance, or other reason—if the instructor feels that this schedule will not hinder progress. These students taking bi-weekly or occasional lessons will take a full hour lesson when they do come, at $40.00 per hour. They are expected to pay in full for each lesson on the day of the lesson.
Non-weekly students may not necessarily be assured of a reserved specific time-slot on a long-term basis, although we will attempt to establish and maintain a regular time at your convenience if possible. Policies regarding required number of lessons per semester will not apply to non-weekly students. However, except for advanced or professional pianists, non-weekly students are expected to come frequently enough to remain motivated and to make reasonable technical and sight-reading progress over time.
