About Michael

My scholarship and passion for writing started very early in my college career. Once I found my passion, it became my focus of study. I learned how to write in different genres and in different conventions. Writers have two outlets for their work--writing and teaching. I ran towards both: while writing academic papers, I wrote small pieces for publication, and became a Writing Fellow and tutor. As a Writing Fellow and tutor, I created novel a way to help other students write better papers through a layering process. My layering process turns mediocre papers into great papers that people want to read, and enjoy reading, regardless of the subject. My layering process transforms the way students view their writing process and makes them more efficient writers. Writing well comes from one's perception. My layering process enhances one's perception; thus, it enhances one's writing.

In addition, I figured out study techniques that helped students know required material, rather than merely memorizing it. We do not memorize how to tie our shoes, tell someone what time it is, or make a cup of coffee--we know how to do these things. I can help students study in a way that will allow them to not only know required material instead of memorizing it, but to apply that material in real life. My study techniques make retention of complicated material much easier than traditional models.

I will help you at your home or online. My tutoring rates are based on me coming to meet you; however, I will tutor you online, via video chat, for $30 an hour. I save traveling time and you save money.

I have a degree from Bard college, where are I was trained in pedagogy and composition theory. Furthermore, I was a Writing Fellow and tutor there. In addition, I tutored students from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and North Country Community College. I also prepared students for the reading and writing parts of the General Equivalency Diploma test, including students who had English as a second language.

About the lesson

Initially, I speak to students about their goals from tutoring, learn about their strengths and weaknesses, and how much time they have to reach their goals. My focus is to scaffold lessons that build on the student's successes, while repairing troubled areas. This leads me to create smaller goals that propel them towards reaching their larger goals. My belief is that every step counts; thus, I tailor our sessions to build on their strengths, diminish their weaknesses, and help them reach their goals, one step at a time.
