About Martina
My style is coaching toward independence. I teach reading comphrension in a approach that feels authrentic to young learners and that equips them to take ownsership over thier own development. In addition to reading comphrehnsion, learners develop goal-setting and self-monitoring skills that are transferrable to other subjects and areas of their lives.
I enjoy celebrating the growth in skills in every learner, as well as the confidence they gain when they reach and surpass their goals. I love being able to connect through the content and explore literature and a range of topics from different perspectives.
I started teaching formally when I joined Teach for America in 2014. I recognized the disparities in the education system and I already enjoyed teaching. I joined the orginzation because of its alignment to my personal values and passion for education. Previously, I worked with children as an afterschool counselour and tutor in NYC; and while completing my Bachelor's, I worked at my college's writing center as a consultant.
I have a Bachelor's in English with specilaization in Creative Writing. My training in reading comprehension comes from 6+ years of on the job experience as an English teacher. I have worked with high schools juniors, and middle schoolers. I have a track record of results that include passing standardized tests and in advancing in reading levels for promotion and graduation.

I start by asking learners to fill out a questionnaire that includes their goals and a collection of formal and informal assessment data. I use the data and the learners' personal goals to determine the best course of action and a feasible timeline. I present my plan to the client and once we both agree, we can begin!
