About Emily
My name is Dr. Emily Loboda. I have my Doctorate of Musical Arts in saxophone performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and I am currently the saxophone professor at East Tennessee State University.
As a teacher, I have a proven record of both recruiting and educating fine young saxophonists. Since arriving at my current position at East Tennessee State in the fall of 2017, my saxophone studio has grown from four students to its current strength of twelve students.
My current teaching responsibilities include undergraduate classical and jazz saxophone lessons, music theory and aural skills, jazz pedagogy, chamber music, repertoire class, woodwind methods, woodwind pedagogy, and woodwind literature. Previously, I was a lecturer of jazz appreciation and interim applied jazz saxophone instructor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) where I shared interim duties with Branford Marsalis. I also taught at Mitchell Community College (MCC), where I led the jazz band, taught Music History I and II and a hybrid Music Appreciation course, and instructed saxophone lessons.
In addition to teaching, I present performances, presentations, master classes, interviews, and residencies around the world. Recently, I have performed commissions and presented research at national conferences such as the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA) Conference, the American Single Reed Summit, and The United States Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium. I have appeared as a guest artist and presented recitals and master classes at universities throughout the world, including the University of Northern Iowa, Truman State University, Duke University, and Shoaguan University in Shaoguan, China. As a soloist, I have performed with orchestras in Tennessee, Michigan, and North Carolina. I recently held instructor residencies at Shaoguan University in Shaoguan, China and Virginia Tech University, which included instructing saxophone, clarinet, chamber ensemble, jazz band, and wind ensemble. As a jazz performer, I have been a member of the Camel City Jazz Orchestra and Jonesborough Rhythm Express, where I perform on saxophone, clarinet, and flute.

I have always loved music and the saxophone and in my undergrad I developed a love for teaching others about my passions.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in music education, Master's Degree in Music Performance- Saxophone, and Doctorate of Musical Arts in saxophone performance. I have been teaching private lessons since 2010. I have taught collegiately since 2012 and I currently work as the saxophone professor at East Tennessee State University where I also teach Theory and Aural Skills.

The lesson process really depends on age and experience of the student. I aim to mold my teaching to the student's abilities.
I have worked with 3rd grade to adult begginners, and I have worked with music majors at the college level.
Always make sure you are hiring a professional. You do not want to learn incorrect habits from a less experienced teacher. The price difference may be daunting, but you will be better off in the long run with a professional musician.

Dr. Loboda is an amazing and well rounded musician. She is incredibly knowledgeable about saxophone performance and proficient in any style. She is also well versed in theory, ear training, and piano. Along with her many talents she is kind, patient, and flexible which all make her a great teacher.
Dr. Loboda is an amazing teacher and an amazing person! She is fun and caring and really tries to find ways to connect to her students. If you ever get the chance to hear her perform you will know that she is 100% serious about music, and this carries into her lessons as well. Plus she gives fun stickers, some have cats on them!
Dr. Loboda is very good saxophone teacher, my daughter has a very good time and gets improved a lot with her.
Dr. Loboda is one of the kindest and most knowledgeable teachers I have ever worked with. She served as my collegiate saxophone instructor for multiple years and always provided descriptive praise and feedback regarding my playing. She helped me improve my overall musicianship as well as my organizational skills. Additionally, she does an excellent job at encouraging her students to be confident when performing. She is truly one of the best people to work with in the music profession!
