About Katherine
I have been performing professionally and teaching voice and related courses in musical theatre, opera, pop, country, and jazz for 25 years. I possess a Doctorate in Vocal Performance and currently am an Asst. Professor of Voice/Musical Theatre at the University of Texas at Arlington which is centrally located in the DFW area. I prepare students to audition and perform professionally in their desired area of singing and take the student at the pace that is comfortable for the student.
I equally enjoy teaching beginners about their instrument and how to read music quickly and accurately as well as honing the experienced professional's repertoire book and their technique. I specialize in Acting the Song, Vocal Pedagogy, Performance Practice, Audition Prep, and Music and Musical Theatre Theory/History with regards to singing. I view my private studio and it's students as a place to meet the student where he/she is and where he/she wants to go. I provide a safe and supportive envirnoment as I regard someone sharing their voice with me as very personal and important.
I knew that I wanted to teach since the age of 5 - it has never been a "fallback" profession - always a priority for me. I always loved to sing as a child in church and school choir and also played flute from 5th-12th grade playing in concert and marching band. When I did my first musical, The Music Man, my sophomore year in high school, i knew that this was what I was destined to teach. I set out to learn everything I could about the pedagogy of singing, music, theatre, opera, movement/dance and everything that had to do with singing and acting on stage.

I begin by having the student sing either a song they already know or vocalizing them to get familiar with their voice. I ask them their past experiences with voice or performance and what are both their short term goals for taking voice as well as a long term goal for performing.
I have students who are performing professionally on Broadway and in Los Angeles right now as well as coaching Miss America pageant talent winners and semi-finalists in American Idol. Many of my students also perform professionally in Minneapolis, Denver, and the DFW area. I teach students as young as 8 and as old as 65 (and would happily teach older than that!)
I would definitely suggest clarifying for yourself what it VERY important for you to have in a lesson teacher as well as exactly what you want to learn. For example, are you someone who needs a gentle, calm approach in order to do your best or someone who excites and energizes you to achieve? Do you want to focus on the basics of singing such as breath, free tone, and singing in tune or do you need some audition cuts ready to go so you can get out there and perform? Ask specific questions in order to find the right person for you!

Dr. K is such a warm and kind-hearted teacher! She makes you feel extremely comfortable to try whatever and has helped me repair any mistakes so that they do not happen again. Dr. K strives to make careers in her vocal studio by training us in body and mind, as well as voice. I haven’t been singing long at all. She was one of the first people to ever hear me sing and with her help my voice has grown far beyond what I thought was capable, in just a short amount of time. I highly recommend Dr. K for all ages and all skill levels!
I have been a student of Dr.K’s for almost 4years! She has a great way of teaching you how to sing with your head voice vs chest voice. Dr.K is a master of vocal pedagogy, music theory, sight reading and acting. Take her studio and you will gain a wealth of knowledge!

She knows and teaches all singing techniques classical, pop and musical theatre very well. I learned a lot of how to act while I sing from her. She is also a great person who cares about students. She is encouraging and supporting which are very important materials to build confidence as a performer😉I love the fact that she tailors her lessons to each individual student. There is a good mix of acting and voice instruction for each song. I love her flexibility in scheduling and in the lessons themselves. Lastly, she's a wonderful person and very knowledgeable! I recommend her to anyone!
