About Këlani
Kenita. Hopper
A New Jersey born African American, Kenita Alani Hopper known also as Këlani Hop, grew up straddling two musical worlds. Her deep dedication to the soulful style of Old School Gospel music was eventually accompanied down the road by the sophisticated and precise training in Opera. Kenita‘ s voice type, classified as both Contralto and Mezzo Soprano, created many avenues and opened unexpected doors at the age of seventeen. Miss Alani’s vocal talents and abilities exceeded much expectation and set a precedent having landed a spot in the most prestigious conservatory in the world: Juilliard. Graduating Arts High School in the year 2010, Kenita was the first voice student under the teaching of Dr. Jerry Forderhase, to get accepted into The Juilliard. During her studies there, Kenita made appearances in countless recitals and played significant characters in Opera such as ‘Maman’ from the French work, L’enfant et les sortileges by Maurice Ravel and ‘Baba' from Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium.
Having graduated Juilliard with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music, Kenita continued on in her Voice studies. While at Westminster Choir College in Princeton NJ, also known as the top choir school in the nation, she began touring with Metropolitan Opera conductor Yannick Nezet Seguin. Kenita made notable appearances in major halls like Carnegie and the David Geffen Center in New York, and The Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. At age 25, Kenita graduated Westminster Choir College with a Master’s Degree in Voice Performance and a Minor Degree in Voice Pedagogy.
I went to performing arts schools all my life. When I took Voice Pedagogy as my minor in college I realized there was more to life than just performing. I needed to share my experience with upcoming singers who have the same passion in music as I.

I will ask him or her to clearly state their first and last name.
I will first ask him or her to sing “ My Country ‘‘tis of thee”.
We will go through a series of vocal exercises appropriate for student’s voice fach.
I will asses their current singing and ear training level by assigning them a song or Aria that I feel is best for them.
The goal is to always have fun.
I’ve worked different students of different backgrounds. Some were advanced while others were just starting out. There is a solution for every type of singer and I consider each student’s current ability before helping them progress.
When I was a student at both Juilliard and Westminster, I changed teachers at least once. My advice before hiring a teacher is to have a meeting with them and engage in a conversation. The teacher and you will form a bond. It’s a relationship. You want a teacher who will of course be honest, encourage you to critique yourself in a healthy way. A great teacher is all these things but more importantly they uplift you and reienforce your confidence and self esteem.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The first question a student should ask is what they plan on doing with their singing training. Do they want to make a Career primarily in singing, or coaching?
If my student is in High School or below I would consider possibly scoping out particular performing arts schools or conservatories that will cultivate their new skills.
Where is my voice going? Am I Soprano? Mezzo Soprano? Tenor? Counter Tenor? Baritone? Bass Baritone?
Should I attend a College or Conservatory?
What repertoire should I be singing?
What colleges offer good eartraining and music theory classes?
What Schools offer German, Italian, French, English diction.
Where can I take piano classes?
Where do you see my voice developing to in 5 years?
