About Cynthia
Working with adult learners is not just part of my teaching—it’s the heart of it. I’ve built my flute studio around those who are stepping into music not because they have to, but because they want to. Whether you’re retired, semi-retired, or simply carving out time for yourself after years of prioritizing others, I offer lessons that are supportive, structured, and filled with curiosity. Together, we’ll shape a journey that begins with the basics—tone production, breath control, and finger coordination—but quickly grows into expressive music-making. I take time to understand your learning preferences, past musical experiences (if any), and personal goals. No two students are alike, so I never teach the same way twice. Some students prefer a quiet, meditative approach, while others love structure and weekly challenges. I embrace both. My teaching also extends beyond just playing the notes. We explore the emotional side of music, connect with the stories behind the pieces, and work through the mindset barriers that can come from years of self-doubt or “I’m too late” thinking. I use easy-to-read notation, custom play-along tracks, and simple tools that help students feel at ease—never overwhelmed. The beauty of the flute lies in its intimacy and its flexibility, and I’ll help you find your own voice on the instrument at a pace that feels right for you.

Beyond the physical, I emphasize the importance of sensory awareness. I encourage students to listen not just with their ears, but with their whole bodies. We explore the tactile sensations of the flute against the skin, the vibrations resonating through the chest, and the subtle interplay between breath, embouchure, and sound. I use guided listening exercises, inviting students to close their eyes and immerse themselves in the nuances of tone color, articulation, and dynamics.
We analyze recordings of master flutists, not just for their technical prowess, but for the emotional depth and expressive intent conveyed through their playing. Rhythm is taught not just as a matter of counting beats, but as a physical experience. We explore rhythm through movement, using clapping, stepping, and even gentle dance-like exercises to internalize rhythmic patterns. Students learn to feel the pulse of the music in their bodies, developing a strong sense of timing and groove. I incorporate Dalcroze Eurhythmics principles, adapting them to the specific needs and abilities of adult learners. This approach helps students develop a kinesthetic understanding of rhythm, making it more intuitive and expressive. For students who may have experienced physical limitations or discomfort in the past, I offer a patient and adaptive approach.
I work closely with each individual to identify any challenges and develop strategies to overcome them. We explore alternative fingerings, instrument modifications, and supportive exercises to ensure that playing the flute is a comfortable and enjoyable experience for everyone. My goal is to empower students to discover their own unique physical relationship with the flute, fostering a sense of ease, freedom, and embodied musicality. This approach not only enhances their playing but also promotes a greater sense of body awareness and well-being, enriching their lives both on and off the stage.
