About John

John Matysiak is an acclaimed American cinematographer whose work spans feature films, major television series, and high-profile music videos. He is particularly well known for his collaborations with director Potsy Ponciroli and has been a featured guest on industry programs.

Old Henry (2021): A highly praised, gritty indie Western starring Tim Blake Nelson. Matysiak worked closely with director Potsy Ponciroli to capture a bleak, naturalistic, and classic visual style

Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty (2023): He served as a cinematographer for the second season of this stylized HBO sports drama series

Motor City (2025): He reunited with Ponciroli for this nearly dialogue-free 1970s Detroit crime thriller. On The Cinematography Podcast, he detailed reverse-engineering a 35mm film aesthetic using digital Alexa cameras and staging practical, real-in-camera vehicular stunts.

About the lesson

Five years ago, I was primarily shooting music videos and commercials and trying to figure out how to make the jump into narrative work. The biggest shift in my career came when I stopped thinking only about how to make images look good and started understanding why I was making certain creative choices in the first place.

Once I became clearer about my point of view, my taste, and the kind of stories I wanted to tell, the work began to change.

These one-on-one consulting sessions are designed to help cinematographers do the same. We can talk through your work, lighting, visual storytelling, career strategy, reel, representation, breaking into features and television, or wherever you feel stuck. The goal is to help you identify what makes your work uniquely yours and how to build a career around that.
