About Sophie
I am a final year medical student at Barts and the London. I graduated from my intercalated degree in 2020 with a first in Pharmacology and have passed my final exams meaning I will start working as a doctor in August. I also achieved As in maths and science subjects at A-level and A* at GCSE so this puts me in a good position to aid with exam technique. I am also able to give students an insight into studying and researching science in the real world.
I have over 3 years and 600hr+ tutoring experience with clients of all ages, from KS2 to adult learners. The large majority of my experience is online so I have a good knowledge of how to utilise online platforms to make lessons engaging and informative.
I have had multiple students for 1 to 1 lessons and also in groups for GCSE science and all have improved their confidence and subsequently their grades in a short space of time.
I have tutored many students for the 11+ exam, teaching VR, NVR and maths. All my students have gotten into the first or second choice school and I have taught both GL and CEM syllabuses.
I am also more than happy to help with interview technique and personal statements. I have experience of sitting on interview panels so I have a good insight into what they are looking for and what makes a good candidate.
Experience
I have successfully tutored students in a tutoring centre setting using a one to one approach as every student is unique and has different needs to achieve their goals. I also have clients of varying age groups to year 3 up to adult learners. I have tutored for over 150hrs online in KS2 English and maths and science up to GCSE level. I also have experience in preparing students for the 11+ and 13+, with many of my students seeing significant improvement in a short space of time. An example would be I have a student I am preparing for the 11+ whose practise test scores increased from 60% to 90% in a couple of months.

As each student is different, it requires slightly different approaches. The first lesson, which can be offered as a trial, is all about making an individual plan to concentrate on the areas that need work and make sure we address any gaps in subject knowledge. During the sessions, I make sure the student is always engaged with questions and activities. I often use mnemonics and comparisons (often silly!) to help make the lesson content long term memory. I set homework after each lesson, which we go over at the beginning of the next lesson so topics are constantly being revisited, as repetition is often the best way to learn!

Sophie has been tutoring my 12 year old daughter remotely via Zoom for the last 3 months during the lockdown, the sessions are every week and have covered year 7 maths and science topics as well as specific revision and practice areas. The sessions have been really successful in building my daughters confidence in the topics covered and she is now much happier with her maths and science work generally, and will solve problems using the methods that she has learned with Sophie.
