About Carlos
If you're reading this you're probably trying to figure out what makes a good teacher, or if you even need one. I can tell you that most musicians attain their goals because they have excellent mentors to unveil the path forward. Sometimes that's one chance meeting, and sometimes that's a multi-year apprenticeship. I've been lucky enough to have both in 15 years of playing guitar, and I can attest that it is true.
Those mentors for me include:
- A Julliard graduate with a doctorate in music
- A Latin Jazz percussionist with a deeper rhythmic pocket than I knew existed
- A soundboard engineer who worked with Sting, BB King, the Allman Brothers, and many many other classic rock acts.
- A suite of jazz professors that each favored different jazz stylings.
What this is to say is, I stand on the shoulders of giants. I love bringing people up in the clouds with me and pedagogy has become my true passion. Making the same concept 'click' for different people is tricky, but it's an endlessly rewarding puzzle. Even if it's just a one-off lesson to brush up on theory concepts, I'd love to meet for a lesson and get your where you're going.

I've taught 7-year-olds to 60-year-olds! No matter your pace, I can accommodate you! What sets me apart is an emphasis on bolstering your ability to teach yourself. In every musical journey, there are side projects and wish lists that get too massive to bring to each lesson. I'll make sure you're well-equipped to tackle songs that don't have thorough online resources.
What to expect:
- An emphasis on application: every exercise will be in service to something we are learning.
-Personal expression: Learn it how the pros do it, then how to riff on it yourself!
- Songs and "stealing:" Songs are great to learn, but better to pull ideas from! Together we'll parse what makes a song unique and how to bring that to other pieces.
- Arranging for solo work and group settings: Knowing how you integrate in a group requires a LOT of musicianship and knowhow, learning how to flush out a full arrangment even more so; I'll make sure you're well rounded as a player as well as a bandmate!
We will always go as fast as you are comfortable, practice 4 hours a day? No problem, each exercise and song will have multiple variations to keep you busy all week. Only every other day? I'll make sure we dial in on what matters most to YOUR goals as a player.
