About Jacob
Hello! I'm Jacob - a recent graduate of the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, where I received First-Class Honours in the BSc Architecture (ARB/RIBA Part I) course. I'm Singaporean-American and have lived in London for the last three years.
I'm here to help you navigate the complex world of applying to or working through university architecture courses!
Here are some of my qualifications:
- Achieved top-marks at the Bartlett, scoring firsts in all subjects including: design projects, architectural technology, and history and theory of architecture.
- Awarded Trevor Sprott Prize for best undergraduate architecture dissertation.
- Awarded a highly competitive full scholarship for my undergraduate course.
- Offered places in top architectural schools around the world, including: UCL, Bath, Glasgow School of Art, Manchester School of Architecture, Nottingham (UK); The Cooper Union, Washington University (US); NUS (Singapore).
- Completed my Pre-University studies (GCSE, IB) in a specialised visual arts school.

DESIGN PORTFOLIOS: 1-to-1 lessons tailored to your specific design project. We'll start all lessons by establishing your project requirements - understanding your design brief, key skills required, and expected learning outcomes. Depending on your needs, I'll then help you across all areas of design project development, from the basics - laying out your portfolio and learning key software packages (Rhinoceros, V-Ray, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign etc.) - to more advanced design development - guiding you through and evaluating your design process, refining your project parameters, and helping you frame and sell your project in presentations.
The goal of these sessions will be to equip you with a strong, coherent, and well-designed portfolio for your university applications or design projects.
UNIVERSITY / SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS: 1-to-1 personalised lessons to help you navigate the complex world of architecture school applications and funding opportunities. I'll start these sessions by understanding you, your interests, and your goals for a university course in architecture. I'll then guide you through all stages of the application process, from shortlisting schools, to preparing your portfolio (see above), writing UCAS/CommonApp statements, and preparing for interviews and presentations.
The goal of these sessions will be to equip you with a deep understanding of the schools you're applying for, a strong application statement that reflects your strengths and interests, and a portfolio that will showcase your design ambition to admissions assessors.
ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY & THEORY ESSAYS: 1-to-1 personal tutorials to help you develop strong architectural history and theory essays. We'll start these sessions by identifying your assignment brief, developing a research methodology and creating an essay plan. Depending on your specific needs, I'll then assist in everything from the basics - forming an essay structure, argumentative skills, and proofreading - to more advanced skills - providing insight into specific subjects/topics (eg: modern architecture, conservation and heritage, architecture and politics), curating recommended readings, and detailed essay feedback.
The goal of these sessions will be to equip you with the writing ability, argumentative skills, and subject-matter knowledge to write a compelling and exciting architectural history and theory essay.
