About Andrew

I’m Andrew McInnes — I’ve played guitar for 10+ years and taught for 3+ years.

When I started, I was obsessed with playing fast and copying other guitarists perfectly. But I found real freedom when I learned the scales, chords, rhythm and theory behind the songs, not just the songs themselves.

My lessons still use songs you love, but we focus on the concepts inside them. That way you can take those ideas and use them your own way — whether that’s improvising solos, writing your own music, or just playing with more confidence.

I teach all ages and levels, from absolute beginners to experienced players wanting to go further. We can flex the balance of theory vs playing to match what you want.

If that sounds like your kind of learning, give me a shout. I’d love to help you unlock your potential and truly understand the guitar.

About the lesson

My teaching revolves around helping you truly understand the guitar. We’ll learn your favorite songs, but we’ll also dig into the concepts behind them — in a collaborative, no-pressure way.

• Lesson length: 30–60 minutes, tailored to you
• Qualifications: First Class Honours in Popular Music, Edinburgh Napier University. Distinction in Grade 8 Guitar, Trinity
• Experience: 3+ years teaching + 10+ years playing
• Who I teach: Young beginners to experienced adults wanting to go to the next level
• Styles: Rock, Pop, Classical, Jazz

I've been having lessons with Andrew for about 5 months and he's been an incredible guitar teacher! Really patient and great at explaining music theory clearly and in a way that feels interesting and helps you apply them to songs you learn in and outside of lessons. Would highly recommend him for all levels!

I highly recommend Andrew for anyone looking to learn the guitar for the first time or level up their playing. His lessons are very well structured and tailored specifically to what I want to learn. What sets him apart is his ability to weave music theory into songs or concepts I enjoy and am trying to learn, which is very helpful to the overall understanding of the instrument. He is patient, listens well, and manages the pace of the lesson excellently, making sure I've mastered a concept before moving on, but at the same time not wasting time on things I can practice on my own.
