  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My mom put my sister and I through private tutoring when I was younger and it had a tremendous impact on our academic performance throughout school. I was tutored from age 4 because I did not know how to read and write and always fell behind in class. Ever since my mom put me in private tutoring classes, I not only developed my reading and writing skills but was top of my class consecutively through out school. I saw how private tutoring helped me and I wanted to help other students fulfil and maximise their potential.
I come from a family who built a career in finance. My mom was a banker for more than 20 years and was a manager at one of the best banks in the country. I guess she inspired me so in school I selected anything finance related. OfCourse finance was not an option then so I started off with business studies, then progressed to study economics for my bachelors and then accounting and finance for my masters. Not intentionally, but I guess I was following in my mothers footsteps.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach quantitative subjects and its application to business and the economy. Particularly, I teach Maths, Economics, Finance, Accounting and Philosophy. I also dabble with English and Political Science. I enjoy topics in Mathematics such as ratios and proportions. I believe if you can grasp these fundamental topics, you would go far in all the subjects I teach. I enjoy all of these subjects because it would enable anyone who gains knowledge and understanding of these subjects become a business tycoon in whatever industry they find themselves working in.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have so many teachers that inspired me and so many teachers that did not inspire me. For instance, I am grateful to my private tutor, Mr Sunday Ossai, for instilling in me a love for Mathematics. However, I am not grateful to some other teachers I had who did not see potential in me. I believe everyone has potential to be really good or great at something. My biggest role model is my mother. She kept pushing me even when the my whole world said I cant achieve, she still had faith in me that I was capable.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think a good tutor must have patience, great communication skills and be a subject expert at their chosen field. Without these three things, it would be difficult to do a good job. And OfCourse in anything one has to prepare - prepare for the class and prepare to see the client.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

To be perfect, you just have to start. Move that leg, move that pen, move those hands. Just move something and don't stop.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I think when it comes to economics, maths or any quantitative subject, a difficulty one might face are outliers, anomalies or so. Would your prediction fit the model or would it go outside the range. Now that is a big question.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am passionate about inclusive growth. I once worked for a research company that performed financial analysis of different companies. But they just focused on businesses in developed countries and missed out on a lot of a lot of businesses in developing countries because they were not listed on the London stock exchange. To me it was unbelievable that they used solely those companies to build an Artificial intelligent model. I believe like every human, every business has something to offer in terms of research.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

The length of time I have been a professional tutor makes me a Superprof. This is going to be my ninth year in the education industry as a tutor, teacher and seminar assistant. I have taught at reputable organizations, schools and universities and have taught students from families from diverse backgrounds and with diverse genders. Furthermore, I was a student for 20 years - both in formal and informal education. Lastly, I hold a bachelors and a masters degree.
