About James
I am a retired Army officer and have served as a civilian advisor to the Afghan Ministry of Defence. I have gone to Africa seven times to train soldiers there for United Nations peacekeeping duties. I have instructed students in ESL as a volunteer in the State of Georgia. I taught on the university level for six years. I have a master's degree in business administration and a bachelor of arts degree in English. I am accustomed to working with people from all ethnicities, nationalities and faiths. I edit articles written by non-native English speakers for architectural magazines. I am looking forward to an opportunity to help students learn English again.

The first thing I focused on in ESL training was irregular verbs. These must be memorized--there is no logical "system" for learning them. Then I moved to the use of adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, verb-subject agreement and diction. My teaching philosophy is "crawl, walk, run". It's important to not overload students with too much at one time. One subject area must be thoroughly mastered before moving on to the next. At all times I believe in encouraging the students and dispelling their anxieties about learning new material. I was 100% successful in having my students in Georgia pass the English competency exam.
