About David
I am a former rocket scientist, turned government engineer. I graduated with a Bachelor's of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering in 2014. I then was a Master's of Applied Science Candidate for Aerospace Engineering at Carleton University, studying the performance of a novel ejector for a Rocket-Based Combined Cycle (RBCC) Engine... In other words, an air-breathing rocket! My specialty during this time was Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) - which is a fancy way of saying "simulate gases and liquids on the computer." CFD can be everything from the heat given off from a cup of coffee, to rocket performance, to the aerodynamics of a T-Rex! I then went to the University of Toronto Institute of Aerospace Studies for a Master's of Engineering in Aerospace Engineering, graduating a 2 year program in only 8 months. After graduating, I worked at an Engineering Services Company doing CFD for gas turbines, RBCC, and more! More recently, I have taken a job with the Department of National Defense as a Materiel Acquisition and Supply Engineer.

I have a passion for taking complex ideas and breaking them down into easy to understand concepts. I truly believe that NOTHING is "difficult," but is merely a set of small, easier steps. My lesson plans differ depending on the level and subject matter being taught. But I believe that the main framework is applicable from Kindergarten to Graduate Courses. The majority of my lesson plans will have the following framework: 0) Questions on the material - Prior to the tutoring lesson, I ask that my student review their class notes and write down the questions and difficulties they have with the material taught in class. Similarly, they can write down questions from the previous tutoring session. At the beginning of the lesson, they tell me the material that was covered in class and voice their questions. This way, I can ensure I understand the obstacles and my student leaves the tutoring lesson with all the answers they need. 1) Review the material taught in class - Explaining the main concepts in further detail; drawing analogies to help explain; giving real world examples to show the importance of the subject matter; and ensuring my student understands WHY we are studying the subject. I believe real world examples and understanding WHY we are studying the material is crucial to a deeper comprehension and better recall of the information. 2) Reinforce the material - After covering the material, it is time to reinforce the concepts. This is typically done via a Problem Analysis session - Completing exercises that revolve around the concepts. The exercises will follow a general format of: Given, Required, Assumptions, Solution, Statement. By following this format, the process used in these exercises can be applied across ANY subject. These Problem Analysis exercises will serve two purposes - Reinforce the material and identify areas that need further study. These exercises can either be covered in the tutoring session with my assistance; on the student's own time with me reviewing the answers in the next session; or both. 3) Final review - This part of the lesson covers the remaining questions on my student's mind. Are we missing something? Do we need different analogies or different real world examples? Or do we need more Problem Analysis exercises? In addition, at this time, the student can bring up any constructive criticism of my tutoring - Do we need to change the pace? Do we need to make the Problem Analysis exercises easier or harder? Or any other feedback. The main goal of the session: Ensuring my student leaves the session with a greater understanding of the material, its application to the real world, and hopefully leaving with no remaining questions!
