About Sophie
I started playing the violin in primary school at the age of 8, and at the age of 11 I started playing in regional orchestras. Since the age of 12 I had lessons with Kathryn Parry, a former student at the Royal Academy of Music in London. When I was 17, I became principal violinist for the orchestra in my area - Suffolk Youth Orchestra. The same year I started at the Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama (a national conservatory in London) where I took lessons with Akiko Ono, a former student at Yehudi Menuhin School. During this time, I played in the Conservatory Symphony Orchestra and I also sang in the choir. Since the age of 17 I started to work semi-professionally in adult orchestras in the region, in chamber music, vocal concerts and also as a teacher. I have been in Paris since November, where I take lessons with Philippe Coutelen, a former member of the Paris Opera orchestra, and I am entering my first year of Musicology at the Sorbonne (Paris IV).

I approach my lessons very freely, but always with an emphasis on the technical needs of the students. I would say that I follow the classical structure working through masters, great violinists and teachers throughout history, eg Sevcik, Carl Flesche and Kreutzer among others. For me, it is extremely important to have an established technical ability and a solid facility to be able to then use it constructively in musical expression.
