About Michelle
Hi there! I'm Michelle, a freelance artist specialized in character illustration and visual storytelling. I have a bachelor's in studio art from Gallaudet University, where I explored a plethora of mediums from traditional printmaking to graphic design to stop motion filmmaking. I have so much left to learn, and have had many ups and downs throughout my own art journey, but the takeaway I have at the end of the day is that it's always worth following one's passion, and art is at the heart of mine.
I have always been drawing. I can still clearly remember gluing my proudest works on my living room wall as a little girl and crying at the sight of the shredded paper where a drawing was. Who could blame my parents, really? I may not have known how to properly display my art, but they did, and little actions like them framing my paintings from school are what fueled my enjoyment in creating art. I also recall the day I was given my first-ever "How to Draw Manga" book when I was in middle school. And not long after that, I found Sophiechan90's step-by-step YouTube tutorial on how to draw a manga girl. My journey accelerated from that point on, from enjoyment to obsession, from observing to absorbing information like a dehydrated plant. I was set on being an artist for life, but as it goes with life, things happened.
College never appealed to me even when I was young. Despite my feelings about it, I still went on to community college because I didn't think I had other options. During that time, I decided a more "practical" career route was in my best interest and started pursuing the next interest I had, which was ASL (American Sign Language). Long story short, I changed my major from ASL interpretation to studio art when I accepted that I couldn't live without doing what I believed is my purpose, which you guessed it, is being an artist.
So now, I am still drawing on my free time while considering a path in art therapy for the Deaf and Hard-of-hearing community and individuals who could benefit from a more visual approach to wellness and growth. With nearing eight years of signing experience, six years out of twenty-plus in art education, and five years of tutoring experience, I am equipped to share my knowledge with anyone (hearing or non-hearing) who is open to it.

Do you have characters living inside your mind that you want to meet in person, but don't know how? Are there worlds swirling around in your conscience that could be more than just your dreams if you had the tools and resources? Would you like to share your stories through art?
If you are someone just starting out as an artist or simply curious about drawing in a more cartoony, anime-y, Webtoon-y way, then my lessons are for you! They are of a more informal, casual nature, similar to YouTube tutorials or your artist friend showing you what she knows. However, they emphasize the importance of having a foundation when it comes to drawing, so it won't just all be fun and games; each lesson is a choice you make to becoming the artist you want to be. To keep the instructional experience lively and entertaining, though, we will have the option of taking on art challenges to apply what we have learned!
If it's not obvious at this point, I am not here to be your school art teacher. I'm only here to help you along your creative journey as well as your personal growth as an individual. Because trust me on this, art can be therapy when you least expect it!
With all that being said, my lessons are open to anyone who has little to no experience in art, are interested in experimenting with style and technique, and want to learn how to enjoy their creative process rather than just improve on it. As your tutor, I also prohibit the use of AI, especially when using references. To help me help you, I would like you to answer these questions prior to meeting with me:
1) What do you want to learn or improve on?
2) What materials are we using? (ex. Digital, paper and pencil, pen, colored pencils, watercolor paint, etc.)
3) Do you have any artist inspirations? If yes, please list them. If no, write N/A.
4) Would you like to try an art challenge? (yes/no)
Cheers to art, and the artist!
