About Rob

- What kind of experience do you have?

I've been teaching private students of many ages since my late teens. I've led vocal and instrumental workshops for adults, taught some of UK's most talented young jazz musicians with the National Youth Jazz Collective and, outside of music, volunteered on courses by the More to Life Programme dealing with emotions, relationships, and self esteem.

As a performer, I've played with a number of jazz notables (Stan Sulzmann, Tim Garland, Alan Barnes, Mark Nightingale, Henry Lowther, Clark Tracey) and with my own trio at the City of London Festival and on BBC Radio 3.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes, I have an enhanced DBS certificate presented by the British Federation of Festivals.

Being a musician can bring all sorts of fun and rewards. I'd love to help you find them.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Jazz piano is my speciality; I also teach classical piano, pop keyboards, composition, improvisation on any instrument, theory and general musicianship.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

The Guildhall gave me a musical grounding I could scarcely have hoped for from anywhere else. No element of jazz or classical musicianship was left out: the tradition, the instrument, improvisation, ear training, harmony, rhythm and sight-reading were all given time.

The experience of writing my own music and playing in ensembles has put me in great stead for a performing career, and my final recital was given the jazz department's highest ever mark.

The style and attitude of my teachers (Malcolm Edmonstone, Nikki Iles, Carlos Lopez-Real, Laura Roberts) and visiting artists (Dave Liebman, John Surman, Danilo Perez) has had a deep effect on the way I now teach.

- How much do you charge?

£30 per hour, with an extra £5 if I'm travelling close by, or more if I'm travelling further.

- Where do you teach?

As of September 2018 I'll have a teaching space at home in Merton, or I can travel to you if you're fairly near.

- When are you available?

My timetable is very flexible - any slot has a chance of working.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I'm open to students of any age, and any level from complete beginners to music college hopefuls.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I can take students through Associated Board classical and jazz grade exams, as well as theory and practical musicianship grades, but I don't push for students to take them – music can be just as worthwhile without.
