About Olivia

I read English Language & Literature at King’s College London, graduating in 2016 with a First Class Honours Degree. I have been working in education for over seven years as a tutor and also in high schools, primary schools and independent educational environments such as Kumon. I tutor clients in areas ranging from:
- A Level - English Literature and Language
- GCSE – English Literature and Language
- Pre-GCSE (KS1,2 and 3)
– English (GCSE skills prep)
- Undergraduate Degree Level
– English - 11+ (English and Verbal Reasoning)
- 13+ English/Scholarship Exam preparation
- Adult learning
- Creative Writing (all ages, for those seeking to improve, confidence building)

My personal passion is to write and devise theatre and I recently graduated from Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Paris after a two-year acting course. This has proved to be a lesson in risk taking, doing your best, and going for it! This is also something I encourage in my students - the ability to dare to do your best even if it is hard and even if you might fall short of your goal. It is better to try.

I also work as a freelance writer and editor and have recently contributed to The Climate City focusing on environmental sustainability in cities. Other writing projects include: developing a tv screenplay and writing a novel.

I love teaching because it allows me to use all these skills I am passionate about and pass them onto others in a way that is useful and makes sense to them. I am DBS cleared and also have received Safeguarding training.

Note on bookings: bookings need to be made minimum 24 hours before the lesson. As is this site policy, cancellations within 24 hours cannot be refunded (unless cancellation is made for exceptional circumstances).

After so many years working across a number of specifications: A-Level, GCSE and iGCSE (AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Cambridge International) 11+/13+ (GL, St. Paul's, Queen Elizabeth's School, Kent Test, Dulwich College, Merchant Taylor’s, Sevenoaks, Caterham and Colfe’s) I have a tried and tested method of preparing students for these exams whether it be helping them understand essay technique, close reading of texts, improving creative writing and comprehension, techniques, preparing revision material or learning how to give a speech. I believe everyone learns differently and it is my job as a tutor to find out what this is and to specifically tailor my lessons to the student at hand and give them a better chance at achieving those top grades and helping them find the confidence to do so.

A-Level/GCSE: I have helped students raise their grades from a level 4-5 to a level 8-9 at GCSE. I have an in depth understanding of the various exam boards and the AO objectives students need to understand and use in their exam responses. I work with a lot of past papers in order to identify with students areas of strength to consolidate and areas of weakness to improve. Lessons will explore:
- Identifying language techniques
- Learning how to practise close analysis practise for fiction and non-fiction texts
-Summarising
- Writing technique - fiction and non-fiction
- In depth analysis of literature set texts (themes, characters, and context)
-Quote bank creation -Essay technique

13+ and 11+ English/Verbal Reasoning: Students of mine have gained entrance to top schools such as St. Paul's, City of London, Sevenoaks, Queen Elizabeth's School and HABS. Each school requires a different set of skills and I find that my entrance exam students often struggle in one particular area whether it be comprehension or creative writing. It is my aim to make my students feel as confident as possible in the area of struggle and to reduce as much anxiety about the exam as possible. I like to keep in close contact with parents to discuss aims and assess as we go. Areas covered
-Comprehension, grammar, reading and writing practice
-Practice papers
-Spelling, pronunciation and vocabulary work
-Confidence building games
- Verbal reasoning skills

Overall, I am dedicated to building a safe and enjoyable learning environment that fosters enthusiasm for the subject at hand. I also believe that learning should be as enjoyable as possible and that it is always possible to muster up a little interest in any subject even with the most reluctant students.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I became interested in tutoring after working for many years in primary and secondary schools as a teaching assistant. I felt that I was a good one-to-one teacher as I was quick to assess each child's individual needs and able to shape my teaching around what they needed.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I mainly teach English and Creative Writing but I have also taught Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, History, Drama, Philosophy and Biology in the past. I love English (I studied it at university) and Creative Writing because they involve emotional intelligence. My belief is that you can say anything so long as you can back it up with the text. This is a great skill as it pushes you to have original ideas and back your own opinions. It also teaches fantastic analytical skills that are great for a number of other topics. As for the subjects I am not so keen on… Chemistry. It just didn't come naturally to me but, luckily, I had a great teacher who got me through it!
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was incredibly fortunate as all of my Sixth Form tutors (I studied English Literature, History and French at A-Level) really had my back and believed in me. This made all the difference in my education and ultimately my grades (I got 2 A*s and an A). My Head of Sixth Form once told me: 'Work hard but work smart.' By which I think he meant: put the work in but also have some breaks (sleep, food and the odd episode of Friends are perfectly acceptable reasons to stop for a bit!).
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Listening is hugely important. Not everyone learns in the same way and even though I might have planned a lesson in a certain way I have to be prepared to change course at a moment's notice if I sense the student is struggling. Patience and kindness are musts as no one learns well from a horrible teacher. Finally, I would say a sense of humour and a genuine passion for the subject is key to an enjoyable lesson.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I once misread a question on a history paper. Luckily it was a mock test, but needless to say I thought my life was over when I got a D rather than the A* I was expecting. Since then, 'RTQ' has been mantra with any sort of examination - READ THE QUESTION! This was also a lesson in going easy on myself. There are some exams we will do badly on in life. This is inevitable. So, give yourself a break and remember there will be other opportunities to smash it but also READ THE QUESTION!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

A challenge I come across in lots of my students and have myself faced is what to do on a bad day when you have no ideas. After many years of dealing with this I can honestly say the best thing to do is to try and do it anyway. Write or complete the test to the best of your ability on that day and do not demand perfect conditions as they do not exist. This is good resilience training for any student and a good life lesson in general.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Alongside my passion for teaching and providing positive education experiences, is my passion is for performing and writing. I trained as an actor after attending university and I write and create theatre shows alongside my teaching. It is totally related to English as I constantly have to write creatively, dare to be original, challenge my ideas, challenge other people's and do the best that I can do on the day in imperfect conditions.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I am dedicated to producing high quality lessons. I am punctual. I am polite. I provide good quality resources. I create a calm and nurturing environment for students to learn without shame or fear.
