About Matthew
Having qualified as a secondary school physics teacher I am familiar with the SQA National course requirements and ensure that students have the skills, habits and knowledge they need in order to be successful. Alongside my experience as a teacher, I also have experience tutoring through VTO in Glasgow. I provide tutoring at National 4, 5 and Higher levels for Physics. I have extensive experience working with young people with additional support needs and all levels of ability. I take a flexible and personalised approach to tutoring. I ensure that lessons are planned in advance and have clear learning intentions. I utilise a range of resources and effective questioning strategies to allow students to access and engage with physics learning. I look to increase students motivation and understanding by contextualising learning and relating this to real life examples. Furthermore I utilise feedback from students to identify strengths and areas of improvement. I instil effective learning routines throughout my lessons that allow students to gain maximum marks in SQA assessments.
Pupils often struggle with independent learning as they don't know how to effectively revise. I encourage pupils to take ownership of their learning through 'learning checklists' that are adapted from SQA course specifications. I have experience mentoring pupils on effective study techniques and how to create and manage study plans.
