• 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

  I speak Khmer fluently because it is my native language and an important part of who I am. I grew up speaking Khmer with my family, friends, and community, which gave me a strong foundation in the language from an early age.
  
  Over the years, my appreciation for Khmer has grown even more through my work as both a Khmer language teacher and a Khmer scriptwriter. Teaching has taught me how to explain the language clearly to foreign learners, while scriptwriting has helped me develop a deeper understanding of vocabulary, communication, storytelling, and cultural expression.
  
  Today, I enjoy sharing not only the language itself but also the culture, traditions, and values that make Khmer unique.

• 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

  One historical figure who represents Khmer culture is King Jayavarman VII.
  
  He is remembered as one of the greatest kings in Cambodian history and is admired for his leadership, compassion, and dedication to his people. During his reign, he oversaw the construction of many important monuments, including the Bayon Temple and parts of Angkor Thom.
  
  His legacy reflects the strength, resilience, creativity, and cultural richness of the Khmer people. When people think about Cambodia's history and identity, King Jayavarman VII remains one of its most iconic figures.

• 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

  One Khmer phrase that I particularly like is:
  
  Sok sabbay te?
  សុខសប្បាយទេ?
  "How are you?"
  
  Although it seems simple, it reflects the warm and caring nature of Cambodian people. Khmer culture places great importance on respect, kindness, and maintaining good relationships with family and community.
  
  I also appreciate the way Cambodians show respect to elders through both language and behaviour. Respect for parents, grandparents, teachers, and older people is deeply rooted in Khmer culture, and this is reflected in the language itself.

• 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

  Speaking Khmer matters to me because it connects me to my family, culture, history, and identity.
  
  As a teacher, I have seen how learning Khmer helps students build meaningful relationships with Cambodian people, whether they are visiting Cambodia, living here, working here, or communicating with family members.
  
  I feel proud when my students gain confidence and can hold conversations in Khmer. Language is more than just words—it is a bridge between people and cultures. Teaching Khmer allows me to share a part of Cambodia with the world.

• 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

  One of the biggest challenges in learning Khmer is pronunciation and becoming familiar with the Khmer writing system.
  
  Some Khmer sounds do not exist in many other languages, and the script can appear complex to beginners. However, I believe students can make rapid progress when they focus on communication first.
  
  The most effective learning methods are regular speaking practice, listening to native speakers, learning useful everyday phrases, and using the language consistently in real-life situations.
  
  As a teacher, I encourage students not to be afraid of making mistakes. Confidence and consistency are often more important than perfection.

• 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

  One valuable lesson I learned came from my experience both as a student and later as a teacher.
  
  When I was younger, I noticed that students often remembered information better when they enjoyed the learning process. Years later, when I began teaching Khmer to foreigners, I discovered that many students felt nervous about speaking because they were afraid of making mistakes.
  
  I started creating practical conversations and real-life speaking activities instead of focusing only on memorization. As a result, many students became more confident and progressed faster than they expected.
  
  This experience taught me that language learning is not about being perfect—it is about communicating and building confidence step by step.

• 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

  Although Khmer is my native language, living and working in different parts of Cambodia has helped me gain a broader understanding of the language and culture.
  
  I have had opportunities to interact with people from various regions and backgrounds, which exposed me to different accents, expressions, and cultural perspectives.
  
  In addition, teaching students from many countries has expanded my understanding of how people learn languages. It has helped me adapt my teaching methods and explain Khmer in ways that are easier for international students to understand.
  
  Every student I teach also teaches me something new about communication, culture, and language learning.

• 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

  What makes me a Superprof is my combination of experience, passion, and dedication to helping students succeed.
  
  I have 5 years of experience teaching Khmer and 6 years of experience working as a Khmer scriptwriter, which gives me both practical teaching skills and a deep understanding of the language.
  
  I create lessons that focus on real-life communication so students can start using Khmer confidently from the very beginning. My lessons are personalized according to each student's goals, whether they are learning Khmer for travel, family, work, business, or personal interest.
  
  I believe learning should be enjoyable, interactive, and practical. My goal is not only to teach Khmer but also to help students understand Cambodian culture and feel comfortable communicating with native speakers.
  
  Teaching Khmer is more than a profession for me—it is a passion. I take pride in helping students build confidence, achieve their goals, and discover the beauty of the Khmer language and culture.
