About David
I am a Geology graduate and fully qualified Science Teacher (QTS) with over 13 years of professional teaching experience across state schools, independent education, online schools and private tuition.
**My qualifications and academic background**
I hold a BSc (Hons) Geology (2:1) from Birkbeck, University of London, and a PGCE in Secondary Science (Chemistry) with Qualified Teacher Status from Kingston University.
My Geology degree covered a broad range of disciplines, including structural geology, sedimentology, mineralogy, palaeontology, plate tectonics, geochemistry, geomorphology, geological hazards, magmatic processes, remote sensing and geological field techniques.
My studies combined academic knowledge with extensive practical fieldwork, helping me develop skills in geological observation, mapping, interpretation and scientific analysis.
A particularly valuable part of my degree was an independent geological mapping project on the Isle of Skye, covering part of the Strath peninsula between Loch Slapin and Loch Eishort.
I mapped and investigated the area around Beinn Bhuidhe, Beinn nan Càrn and Suisnish, undertaking geological fieldwork and producing a detailed written geological report.
This experience gave me an appreciation of the importance of connecting geological theory with field observations and interpreting geological evidence.
**My professional teaching experience**
Throughout my teaching career, I have taught Geology at GCSE and A-level, alongside Biology, Chemistry and Physics at secondary level.
Between 2019 and 2025, I established and ran a successful private science tuition business, providing personalised online and face-to-face tuition, including GCSE and A-level Geology.

**My teaching approach**
I believe that effective Geology teaching involves developing a genuine understanding of Earth's processes and the evidence used to interpret its history, rather than simply memorising facts and terminology.
Every student is different, so I adapt lessons to their level, learning style, existing knowledge and academic goals.
I use clear explanations, geological diagrams, photographs, geological maps, cross-sections, worked examples and interactive questioning to help students understand complex geological concepts.
I encourage students to develop their scientific reasoning, problem-solving abilities and confidence in interpreting geological evidence independently.
**GCSE and A-level Geology**
For GCSE and A-level students, lessons are aligned with the relevant examination specification, including WJEC/Eduqas qualifications.

**Geological mapping and fieldwork experience**
As part of my BSc (Hons) Geology degree, I completed an independent geological mapping and research project on the Isle of Skye.
