1. Phonemic Awareness Warm-Up (5 Mins | Auditory & Oral Play)
Sound Tapping: Say individual sounds aloud (e.g., /s/ /a/ /t/) and have the student blend them into "sat".
Middle Sound Hunt: Ask the student to identify the middle vowel sound in spoken words like mat, map, and tap.
2. Sound & Letter Sprint (5 Mins | Letter Automaticity)
Flashcard Drill: Rapid visual recognition drill for target consonants (m, t, s, p, c) and vowel a.
Tactile Trace: Have the student trace the letter a on a textured card or sand tray while chanting: "a, apple, /a/!"
3. Word Building Lab (10 Mins | Direct Phonics & Decoding)
Continuous Blending: Slide a finger under magnetic letter tiles c–a–t while smoothly sounding out "c-a-t... cat".
Word Chains: Change one sound tile at a time to build new words: cat ➔ mat ➔ map ➔ tap.
4. Sound-to-Paper Writing (10 Mins | ️ Encoding & Mechanics)
Elkonin Sound Boxes: Dictate 3 CVC words (pat, sam, cap). The student pushes tokens into sound boxes and writes the matching letters.
Sentence Dictation: Guide the student to write one short sentence: "Sam sat." Remind them to start with a capital letter and end with a period.
5. Story Reader Quest (10 Mins | Decodable Reading & Fluency)
Read Passage: Have the student read a decodable text: "The cat sat on the mat."
1st Read: Focus on accuracy, letter-sound matching, and finger-tracking.
2nd Read: Focus on expression and building fluency.
Check-In: Ask comprehension questions: "Who sat on the mat?" and "Where is the cat?"
6. Star Finish & Wrap-Up (5 Mins | Positive Reinforcement)
Celebration: Award a star sticker or high-five for great focus and blending effort.
Parent Debrief: Share session highlights and 1 quick home practice tip (e.g., hunting for short /a/ words during bedtime reading).
