About Marlies
Connecting learning to everyday life An effective strategy for motivating students is to demonstrate the relevance of curriculum content to everyday life. When students can see how what they are learning applies to real-life situations, their intrinsic motivation increases. For example, in a math lesson, you can show how equations are used to solve problems in everyday life, such as family budgeting or recipe planning. Encouraging autonomy and choice Giving students the opportunity to make choices in their learning process can boost their intrinsic motivation. This can be achieved, for example, by allowing them to choose projects, research topics, or presentation methods. When students feel that they have some control over their learning, they are more willing to engage. Making strategic use of extrinsic reinforcements While intrinsic motivation, as we have discussed above, is the most enduring form of motivation, external reinforcements can also play an important role. The key is to use external rewards strategically, meaning offering prizes or recognition for a job well done can act as positive reinforcement, as long as it doesn't become the only reason to learn. Encourage collaboration and healthy competition among students Without a doubt, it has been shown that social interactions can be a powerful driver not only of motivation, but of personal growth. For this reason, it is considered important to encourage collaboration in group projects and friendly competitions can increase students' intrinsic motivation. This is supported by studies that show that the feeling of belonging to a group and the desire to stand out can boost commitment to oneself and to academic tasks. Set goals and give feedback: Finally, setting clear goals and providing constructive feedback is another essential link to motivating students in our classrooms. So, goals provide a sense of direction and purpose, while feedback allows students to understand their progress and how they can improve.
