1. Teaching Methodology and Techniques
My approach to dance teaching is cantered around creating a supportive and engaging learning environment that fosters both technical skill development and artistic expression. Here are the key elements of my methodology:
Progressive Learning: I start with foundational movements and concepts, gradually increasing complexity as students gain confidence and skill. This ensures a strong technical base before advancing to more challenging choreography or styles.
Individual Attention: I tailor my instruction to the needs and abilities of each student. This means offering modifications for different skill levels and encouraging students to work at their own pace while still challenging them to push their boundaries.
Holistic Development: I focus not only on the physical aspects of dance but also on musicality, expression, and performance quality. Understanding rhythm, interpreting music, and conveying emotions are all integral parts of my teaching.
Feedback and Reflection: Constructive feedback is a crucial part of my classes. I ensure students receive specific, actionable insights on their performance. I also encourage self-reflection, helping students become more aware of their progress and areas for improvement.
Interactive and Collaborative Learning: I foster a collaborative atmosphere where students can learn from each other through group exercises, partner work, and ensemble pieces. This promotes a sense of community and helps students gain different perspectives on movement and style.
2. Typical Lesson Structure
Warm-up (10-15 minutes): Each class begins with a thorough warm-up that includes stretching, strength exercises, and basic movement drills to prepare the body and prevent injury.
Technical Drills (15-20 minutes): Focus on building core dance techniques relevant to the style being taught (e.g., footwork, turns, balance). This segment also includes exercises that improve coordination and musicality.
Choreography/Combinations (20-30 minutes): Students learn and practice a routine or combination that incorporates the techniques drilled earlier in the lesson. This helps them apply technical skills in a more creative and performance-oriented context.
Cool Down and Reflection (5-10 minutes): The class ends with a cool-down, including gentle stretching and relaxation exercises. I also take a few minutes to discuss the day's lesson, highlight key learning points, and encourage students to share their thoughts or ask questions.
3. Qualifications and Experience
I have 20 years of experience as a dancer, with expertise in ballet, contemporary, hip-hop, salsa, Spanish Dance, Flamenco, etc . I studied in the Conservatory in Spain, the Royal Ballet, The London Russian Ballet and Central London school of Ballet. Over the years, I have taught a diverse range of students, from beginners to advanced dancers, across various age groups.
