About Dominic

I’ve been playing music since I was 4 years old when I began piano lessons. Around 10 I started taking drum set and percussion lessons. I received my first orchestral appointment at the age of 16 with the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra as a Percussionist and have since played with the South Florida Orchestra, Orlando Philharmonic, The Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra, the Santa Monica Symphony, the Downey Symphony, the Las Vegas Philharmonic, and I have won a tenured position as the Principal Percussionist and Timpanist of the Reno Chamber Orchestra. Despite all of my orchestral background, my first love was the Marimba, which is what led to me studying with Svet Stoyanov at the Frost School of Music for 4 years. To make sure that is still a part of my life I actively work as a chamber musician in LA and beyond with my Percussion duo Harduo. Beyond playing, I’ve been working as a teacher since 2015 when I first taught Drumline in Florida at Fort Pierce Central High School. After that I worked with the Shalala Music Reach Program teaching one-on-one and two-on-one lessons with students who would’ve been otherwise unable to afford private lessons. Students from that program went on to get into Miami’s major arts school, The New World School of the Arts, as well as going on to win auditions for the National Youth Orchestra and Interlochen Summer Arts Camp all with full-ride scholarships. My former and current teachers include: John Shaw (Florida Orchestra), Matthew Strauss (Houston Symphony), Svet Stoyanov (International Soloist), Aaron Serfaty (Jazz drummer and recording artist), James Babor (Los Angeles Philharmonic), Joseph Pereira (Los Angeles Philharmonic), and Greg Zuber (Metropolitan Opera). Outside of classical music I play plenty of drum set and hand-drums whenever I can with friends from various jazz and pop backgrounds. Finally! Outside of music entirely, I’m an avid sports fan and love to play basketball whenever I have enough free time!

My method is based on both my experience as a student and as a teacher. With new students I like to focus on using technique to create the sounds we want out of any of our instruments, while making sure those technical facilities can be used on any percussion instrument. Due to my diverse background as a student I can use a large variety of my pedagogical influences to make sure each student works on what is right for their hands and body.

Typical lessons will depend on the students level. I’m comfortable working with students from just starting out in percussion (middle school age or older), to people who are already in a degree and just want another set of ears on something. Because of that I will adapt my lesson plan to each student as they come!

As an active performer in many West Coast orchestras I can really help a student see what the life of a freelancer is like in addition to helping them grow as a player and prepare for their auditions! Reach out and lets work together!
