About Jami
I’ve served as Dance Instructor/Choreographer/Guest Artist/Guest Instructor for students of all ages and experience/skill levels in professional/recreational and educational settings for 30+ years. I have performed and/or choreographed professionally in various Dance Companies for 11+ years. I received my B.A. in Dance with my minor in Theatre Arts from UNC-Charlotte (1994-1999). Ballet/Contemporary/Adult Classes/Pilates are my specialties, but I’m confident in teaching Creative Movement/Tap/Jazz/Lyrical/Musical Theatre and Theatre Classes amongst others. I possess a strong background working with students with mental and physical disabilities. I honor the history of numerous dance genres and often set culturally inspired choreography on my students. I educate my students in Ballet Terminology and Human Kinesiology. Overall, Life is Dance and Dance is Life! I feel as though I’m unique because I assess and evaluate EACH AND EVERY STUDENT so that I’m able to understand their strengths and personal challenges in order to meet their needs on their level while helping them improve and grow each lesson. I encourage openness, commitment to the craft, commitment, being kind to others in class and keeping a sense of fun and freedom to express one’s self in any genre of Dance. I promote body positivity and self-care for my pupils. I am strict yet encouraging and strive to help each and every student learn that Ballet (especially) Technique does not have to be boring, yet it is the essential foundation and starting point to becoming a successful dancer in ANY genre. I support improvisation and student choreography to allow my students to express themselves and grow as young budding artists. I also work to help students incorporate facial expressions and feeling the music to make them better able to PERFORM at all times, even in a Tuesday night technique class. IF YOU ARE SEARCHING for a thoroughly professional and experienced instructor that gives LOTS of Constructive Criticism but is also personable and light-hearted, I am who you’ve been looking for! I have been a Dance Competition Coach and Choreographer for 20+ years, so I know full well how Dance Competitions operate and what judges look for. I’ve traveled all over the country with colleagues and students to Dance Regionals and Nationals. Since I’ve attended countless competitions, I am aware of how they operate. I can offer private all the way up to large group Choreography geared toward Competition standards. I myself and more importantly my Competition dancers have taken home numerous awards for pieces I’ve choreographed and cleaned/polished as well as trophies for overall highest scoring dances. I’ve choreographed countless winning pieces and am proud to say my studio won OVERALL Highest Scoring studio at Nationals in Virginia Beach 9 years ago before my sabbatical, and those same students have won OVERALLS at many other National Dance Competitions as well. I’m also available to work with individuals or groups on already set choreography so that I can use my keen eye and expertise to clean and polish their performances. In conclusion, I have a very extensive collection of experience and training as a Professional Ballet Dancer/student, Choreographer and Instructor under my dance belt, so I’m able to teach anyone of any age or background with individual needs being my first priority. I’m sensitive to physical injuries and physical limitations that students may experience and am quite skilled in injury prevention as well as working around physical conditions that stand in a student’s way of dancing to their full potential. Dance is my greatest passion and I love nothing more than when a student finally “gets it” and I can witness not only their physical/technical progress but just as importantly seeing them fully enjoying themselves and finding their “voice” and confidence through the Art of Dance. I hope you will consider me as your future Mentor and Teacher!

I meet my students where they are with their challenges and go back slightly to revisit what they were doing well with before their difficulties began. I move at a comfortable, non-pushy, individualized, and measured pace for each student while gently leading my students to challenge themselves outside of their comfort zones. I get to know each student individually on an intellectual and emotional level to better understand why they are in need of tutoring. I am patient and do not hesitate to go over a lesson again and again until the student feels they have a firm understanding of what is being taught. I often assign a small amount of homework to review what we went over and I include any vocabulary or formulas we are working on to assist the student’s recollection. I ask that they keep a notebook for solving equations, taking notes and they are encouraged to write down any and every question they have for enduring each week between lessons. I strive to not only help with the academic challenges facing my students, but also to understand and relate to them on a personal level so that I can serve as an informed Mentor and safe adult to discuss anything with. I give positive feedback and fully explain why a student might miss a problem so that they gain a better understanding of the subject matter moving forward. Lastly, I am very versatile with my approaches to teaching each individual future scholar. What works for one student may not work for others. I am able to recognize this spectrum of how each child learns best and cater each session towards the individual being taught. I also encourage open communication with the parents/guardians if the student is under 18 and will provide documented progress reports on how their child is improving as well as where they are encountering challenges. I greatly encourage the parent(s) or guardian(s) to get involved and work on skills that challenge the student during the week between sessions.
