Fostering the musical growth of students is my top priority as an educator. I have set it as goal to not only inspire passion, precision and creative expression in them, but also prepare them to become leaders who are equipped and be and asset to the community. In order to achieve these goals, I aim to immediately address the problems that can hinder a student's development and those are the challenges of learning the basics of intonation, pulse, and sound quality. I believe that these factors are supposed to be addressed at the forefront in order to establish a strong foundation on the student's musicianship. After securing these basics of musicianship, the focus of my teaching point towards guiding the student to develop the skill of identifying the composer’s intention, consisting of articulation, phrasing, dynamics, and color. By equipping the student with these skills, they will be able to further express themselves in a deeper level.

I have always believed that the learning process should involve a healthy exchange of ideas between the teacher and student. I envision my studio to be a place wherein every student has the freedom to express themselves. A lesson in the studio should never be a one-way street wherein all information comes from the teacher. Having said this, I will encourage an environment where the student is free to ask questions and pitch in ideas to which I will meticulously guide him through each query he has in mind. By doing so, I can teach the student to think for himself which would be very beneficial whenever he is in the practice room.

Apart from being interactive, I want to be supportive and encouraging in lessons while still showing clear expectations and a high standard. I believe that positive reinforcement works well in teaching. Not only does it build a good teacher and student relationship, but it also affirms the student that he/she is making progress. In order to do this, I must be sensitive to the personality of the student and from there, adjust the way I give my compliments and criticisms. Since all students are unique, this requires the utmost focus that I must expend to fully know the student, something that I have learned to do in all my years of teaching here and abroad.

Last but not least, I encourage my students to look for opportunities to collaborate with artists from other disciplines (e.g. dance, drama) and to share their music with the community around them. These experiences broaden their horizon and enrich them both as musicians and as people. In turn, they help to prepare them to work with people outside of their profession and therefore better adapt to the changing art scene.

All in all, it is my responsibility as a music educator to make sure that my students are going to make good use of the musical tools they acquire through their study to serve the community. It is my hope that they are going to excel both as artists as well as citizens in the future and that the community can benefit from their artistry.
