About Erika
I love my work, I really enjoy helping other people learn our difficult language and I understand very well how difficult it can be as I have a daughter who is developmentally challenged and a lot of the time it seems as though I am talking to one of my students - the diction, grammar and everything like verb tenses and articles and conjunctions - my daughter struggles with those as well, so I think that gives me something extra when it comes to teaching my students. I do not get angry or upset with students, I don't chastise them at all - I know they are learning and everyone learns at their own pace. I have all ages from 12 to 70 in my past and you just have to be willing to cooperate. I see other tutors notes all the time about how a student is bossy or uncooperative or unwilling to talk - recently I just took one on that they gave to me after she had been through like 6 other tutors and none liked her. I looked at their notes about "unwilling to talk, very quiet" and I decided to bring her out of her shell. I talked to her about things she liked and within a few weeks she was rattling on about everything and doing wonderful! She just needed someone to understand HER and put her needs above "just get the class done". That is not my style, and it never will be. Like I said, I have a very high retention rate if students come back, they will normally ask for me if I am in their time slot. Some have to go to different time slots for work or other reasons, but that will happen. I normally work from 8-11 am EST in the mornings, so in S Korea it's 9-midnight their time so I take that they have probably had a very long work day and are ready for bed into consideration. But I also know that they are alert. When I worked nights and it was early morning, I knew they were just waking up and it may be a little hard to get them focused right away. For 10 minute classes you have to do about a minute or so of free talking and I try to get phrases they would come across in real life situations such as "how's the weather?" or "how are you doing today?" so they don't have the answer in the book. If people have to learn ESL for school or work, a lot of times they get put in situations where they aren't going to use those textbook conversations, it's going to be a lot different when the client or teacher is asking them direct specific questions and they need to be prepared for that. So if a student asks me "hey I have to make a speech at this meeting, can you help me make sure it's good?" I have no problem doing that and we put off the textbook for a few classes. Whatever helps them the most, STUDENT COMES FIRST.

I usually teach from textbooks, most of the adults and executives that I teach now are studying for English proficiency tests, to get jobs or to get promotions. Some study TOEFL or TOEIC for specific needs for job movement. I am very laid back, not harsh or monotone, I enjoy talking with people and try to give real talk that you can use in the real world, not just from the text. I think that sets me apart from a lot of other tutors I have listened to from my own company, and it really shows that my students always come back year after year if they really need a lot of help. Apparently sometimes it's hard to get spots on my schedule because they tell others in the company and everyone says "I want Erika" but they can't fit them all. Of course not every student and I click, but I have had many many wonderful students who I consider friends over the years and this is just such a fulfilling job for me. I can really teach any level of English, right now like I said my normal students need a lot of help so I would say about a third grade textbook is what they work on, so they need help with articles, verb tenses and we go over vocabulary and phrases and then they answer questions. Some read news articles, some do just questions, some are on the TOEIC/TOEFL texts so it really just depends on the needs of each student.
