  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I had been an actor for about 15 years when I was asked by Mountview Theatre Academy to run some workshops. I really enjoyed working with the students and as a result of the workshop I was asked to direct the students 2nd year projects. I have continued to act, direct productions at Mountview and other Drama schools up to the present. While continuing to act I also did a Masters a RCSSD in Actor training and coaching. I am passionate about teaching but also think it is important to combine both acting and teaching as it keeps your finger on the pulse and makes sure the work you do is relevant and up to date.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

Actually it's the work I do with students that affects me the most. Through working with students it's is a reminder to me of the work I should be doing when I perform and keeps me passionate about my own practice.
  • What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

Being passionate and enthusiastic is really important. Feeling comfortable with messing up and getting stuff wrong. That's how we learn. When you are confident enough to mess up and not worry about it, that is where the gold lives. A healthy sense of mischief and play combined with a good work ethic and taking the work seriously will also help you no end.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Find where the joy lives in the work. Sometimes when the work gets tough and difficult you can forget about the joy it brings you and others. So searching for the joy even when playing something dark or painful is important as it keeps the mischievous actor alive and open to possibilities.
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

Acting and Teaching are such a massive part of my life. I can't imagine what I would do without them. I've been doing both now for over 20 years and it still amazes how much energy they give me.
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

I am proud of all the students I have directed in drama school over the years and also I've loved working with people who just want to use the techniques that I teach to increase their confidence and ability to relate others.

In terms of acting, I recently finishing filming a feature with an amazing team of creatives, under difficult COVID circumstances. If it wasn't for the work I do with my students I wouldn't have been able to do the things I needed to do every day on that film.
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

    Every one.

There is always a moment, at some point, where you see the student have a "light bulb moment" and you both recognise it. That, is thrilling for both of you. When it happens you both recognise it as a moment that can't be unlearned and it's brilliant.
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

It's all about the student. It's important to provide a bespoke framework that allows the student to fulfil their potential. Also I try to create an environment where the student feels comfortable to fail without embarrassment, which is the essence of creating exciting work and being a dynamic performer.
