I believe there are a plethora of ways to teach a language; it is important to adjust the teaching method used according to the student!
However, some core-methods I would use are:
-Focusing on verb tenses; understanding the difference between past tense, future, etc.
-Understanding contractions (they're/their/there): definition, when to use them, etc.
-Conversation necessities (especially for students whom require english for travelling purposes)
-Additional pop-culture suggestions as "homework". Watching television shows or listening to songs in english with subtitles/lyrics may help both phonetically and visually.
