About Robin
Who am I? A well-traveled native Californian and teacher who values learning about the cultures of others and passionate about sharing mine! So what? I hold a Master's degree in education, am certified to teach English as a Second Language (ESL), and have over 15 years of experience helping learners of all ages improve their English. My specialty is primary school children as I have taught kindergarten and first grade for a decade. What does it mean? I will help you or your little one learn through games, songs, pictures, and lots of giggles! I use comprehensible input (that means I speak in a way that’s easy to understand!) to make learning feel like play. My lessons follow California state standards. I’m just as engaging with adults too. Learning a new language should feel like an adventure at any age! Most importantly, I create a space where everyone feels encouraged, included, and ready to learn.
This is what a typical half-hour reading/writing lesson looks like:
Personalized start: I begin by getting to know the student and assessing their reading and writing needs. I have a quick digital assessment to obtain a brief snapshot of their foundational skills, as well as leveled readers to practice with.
Familiar reread: A confidence-building read of a favorite easy book that the child brings or one we pick out together. I bring a few just in case.
Word work: Quick, engaging practice with magnetic letters to build and manipulate words. Followed by, the child writing words on sentence strips that I identify as requiring practice. The kiddo then writes the word(s) with a fun smelly marker and cuts them with fancy scissors and rebuilds them like a puzzle.
Instructional reading: A slightly more challenging book is introduced to support progress to the next reading level.
Meaningful writing: Your child writes a sentence of their choice (with fun markers, of course!), then cuts it apart with fancy scissors and reconstructs it to strengthen print awareness.
