About Tyler
Please feel free to ask me any questions about my experiences or background as an educator. I'm more than happy to let you know anything you might be curious about. I hope the info below will answer most, if not all of your questions.
I have been "officially" teaching Mathematics in a classroom for the past five years. My typical class sizes have ranged from 25 to 30 students per class with usually four or five classes a day. Usually I would also teach a sort of computer science class that coincided with math class, which gave students the opportunity to engage in mathematics in a different capacity and have more independent practice. Prior to me becoming a certified teacher, I tutored my peers in high school, during my undergraduate college experience, and while earning my Master's degree in teaching.
Results:
- Two years ago, when I taught at Roxbury Prep Lucy Stone, a charter school with middle school-aged students in Boston, MA, my students received the highest math final test scores of all their peers among the umbrella organization, "Uncommon Schools." If you're not familiar with this organization, they have 49 separate schools of varying sizes throughout Boston (MA), New York City (NY), Newark (NJ), Rochester (NY), Troy (NY), and Camden (NJ).
- This past year, at Clifford School in Walpole, MA, I taught foster youth and children with a variety of behavioral and learning disabilities. These vastly different and traumatic backgrounds provided me with probably the most challenging experience I have had while teaching math. Even so, I developed strong and positive relationships with each of my students and earned their trust. By doing so, my students and I were able to work hard enough for each and every one of them to pass the MCAS-- these are the standardized tests students are required to take in Massachusetts. Even the students who failed one or more times prior to my coming to Clifford School were able to pass the exam.
- At Clifford School, all of the seniors were able to earn either a High School diploma or a certificate of completion (depending on their eligibility). The upper school team and I shepherded these students through this difficult year, and we are so proud of this achievement-- a vast majority of students of similar backgrounds never earn a high school degree. Most drop out during or even before they reach high school.

Greetings!
I teach at a therapeutic school for foster youth, so you might imagine I have a ton of patience. I love teaching, especially working one-on-one or with small groups so that students can receive the attention they deserve. I am definitely not a one-size-fits-all teacher, and I like to give reminders that each and every person has a specific learning style and unique experiences. My philosophy regarding Math is that it is one very large field of knowledge that needs to be broken down into super-tiny bite-sized pieces. Each of these pieces is one step that needs to be taken before the next. We build upon what we already know and practice what we have learned.
A typical lesson or session with me involves the following:
1. Do Now -- This might include a problem or two from previous sessions to assess how much you have retained/learned.
2. Introduce new concept building upon prior knowledge -- This is where I would show you one or more methods of solving a particular problem.
3. Guided Practice -- Here, I will work with you step-by-step to ensure you understand, and to make sure you have ample opportunity to ask any questions you might have.
4. Independent Practice -- This is where you take the lead by attempting at least one or two problems on your own. You can ask questions, but I won't be giving out any answers until you're totally finished.
5. Review -- We come together and review the concepts learned and sometimes we will practice a method called "error analysis." We will take an in-depth look at a solution to a problem and how the person came to her/his conclusion. The work might be yours, but it doesn't have to be.
I am very easygoing, patient, and supportive. I'm passionate about teaching and mathematics, and I hope that I can help you achieve your goals, whatever they may be. I look forward to working with you, and I hope to meet you soon!
