About Vernon
I have 11 years of teaching experience and around 12 years of experience as a professional writer. I have five years of experience, teaching English at secondary (High school) level. I also taught English for six years at the University of the Free State. This was a bridging course, helping students who weren't prepared for studies at a tertiary level. Our education system unfortunately often does not prepare students for the rigorous academic requirements of tertiary (university) level studies. All my teaching experience involved instructing English second language learners, so I have extensive experience when it comes to teaching English as a second language.

I base my classes on the three fundamentals of second language learning; a good balance between reading, writing and speaking. The first stage is to ascertain the current level and language proficiency of the students, in order to establish a platform from which to begin teaching. Students are more likely to learn effectively if they can relate to the material. As a result, I make extensive use of modern, contemporary media, like pop music as well as movies and TV.
