About Benjamin
So, about me! I am a current postgraduate student reading History at the University of London, primarily at Royal Holloway (where I was an undergraduate) but also with a number of other colleges. Academically, I specialise in ancient and early medieval history but through a combination of own school experiences, my time at university and personal interest I am familiar with a wide range of periods and subjects.
I live and breathe the humanities and my aim, in addition to helping a student reach their goals, is pass on that passion however I can. Subjects like English and History are not simply about lists of bullet points and facts, but also individual expression and critical thought. It is true that both of those things are important when looking to excel at exams, yet it is the latter that you can carry with you anywhere whether your future is in theoretical physics or the boardroom.
The commitment of any tutor to their student is to use their experience to help them excel, though the beauty of teaching a humanity is that it is not simply about textbook regurgitation. Instead, the aim is to cultivate a student's own ideas and opinions that are so often distinct from my own! That is what fuels my enthusiasm, not only for my subject but also tutoring itself and I relish the chance to share that enthusiasm with students of any level.

In any essay subject, learning the textbook's bullet points is only half the battle. That being so, once I have discussed and identified the goals and needs of the student, my focus is on the development of their critical thinking and capacity for argument.
Whilst that is my broad goal, there is no singular way to reach it and I prefer to work out with the student what route works best for them. If they feel they would be best served by doing a variety of practice essays then I will support them through that, yet if they feel they have more to gain by engaging in verbal discussion as a way of cementing their familiarity with a topic then that is another possibility (amongst many others) we can explore.
I carry over this philosophy to the length of my sessions too. I am of the belief that condensing content or drawing it out should only be done with good reason. So, if a particular student finds they benefit from short, intensive exposure to a subject or would rather a slower-paced experience I am happy to discuss doing either or, indeed, a mixture of both.
As a note on myself: In addition to tutoring on a personal basis and my degrees, I have been able to attend a number of different courses hosted both by my university and the military which have provided me with a repertoire of different instruction styles to draw upon.
Finally, my experience is primarily with older students and thus my techniques are directed toward those of GCSE and A Level age. That said, if you believe that I may be of help, I am willing to consider all requests.
